She taught herself how to read and write, unbeknownst to me last week. Her nightstand is now littered with books and her drawers filled with paper.  A new lamp attached to her bed's headboard provides her with ample light during the short November days.

Today I sequestered her there, for an un-disclosed period of time, because I was tired of banging my head against the wall arguing with someone who stubbornly thinks they are right.

There was a time though, not too long ago, when silence during solitary confinement meant trouble.

"I love you mommy and you are the gratist and you are the gratist evr."

I should have taught her how to read and write as a toddler.  It would have saved us a lot of money in wall plaster repair.

A really sweet note and a really cool picture. I love it when kids learn to write.

Thanks Steph. I love this photo.

I love taking photos of their work/art as it's a nice way to save it for the future.

It is the best when it comes like that...on their own and when your not expecting it...from the heart. Beautiful

I LOVE this post. It is amazing to me how they can absolutely drive us nuts one minute and the next tell us how great we are. Katie is having a "tall tale" issue lately and it's been driving me nuts and I've been trying to be patient and have all the right mommy-daughter conversations. I've also been very crabby and miserable with the combination of my grandfather passing and my "friend" visiting. And then out of the blue I get "Mommy, you are the best mommy ever because you do such good things for me all the time." Makes my heart melt.

I sure do love that middle child of yours... Evan has written me more love letters than Justin ever did. Especially when he's in trouble! Tell me, what could that angel have POSSIBLY done that caused her to be sent to her room?!?

She totally knows how to work it. Kills me with kindness when she knows I am pissed.

The 2 choices I gave her weren't enough. She argued. Whined. Negotiated. Threw a tantrum. All while Fifi watched and took notes, I am sure.

Oh I love the little notes they write. I usually get a bevy of them when they're in trouble too ... they always crack me up.

That is so cute - It is amazing how quickly they forgive and forget (most of the time)

This reminds me of when nearly 15 year old Giggles would get confined to her room except when Giggles got into trouble and was confined she would write books about a family that loved her and didn't make her keep the little sister that she didn't want.

I love those notes of apology. Those are the notes I am greediest with. I tuck them away, not in the annually logged and organized Keep Forever Bins, but in my very own. Hidden in my closet for my eyes only.

Gotta love those moments. Since they eventually grow up(to teens) and then write you nasty letters.

My youngest wrote a little Mother's Day thing where they filled in the rest of the sentence.

One sentence was..."My mommy is as pretty ______________."

And he filled in...."as me!"

God love little children. It's these moments that keep us from eating them.

It is so cool getting love notes from your kids. Her handwriting is better than my teens.

So sweet, those are the ones you take out when they are teenagers to remind yourself of the love!

absolutely!

I love that you photograph her notes ;-) I've been taking pics of some of ours and scanning all of their artwork and school projects onto my lappy.

Um, can she come and hang out with my kids? Teach them how to get pretty much whatever they want?

Um, yeah Amelia is doing the exact same thing. Darn middles. How in the world did she pick up on the reading and writing I have been practicing with Madeline? I mean I could have sworn that she was too busy making me CRAZY to have been listing to any of the lessons.
All I have to say is that Amelia is SUPER lucky she was born with all that affection to go along with all the stubbornness and strong will. OK, I guess I am the lucky one.

How adorable -- isn't it maddening how they can do the sweetest things after just having made you crazy? I swear they're born knowing how to play mind games!

Oh, and thanks for the compliment on my "farm" (lol) and have fun with yours!
