My terrible, horrible, no good, very bad trait. PDF Print E-mail

When interviewing for my first job in the 1990s I always looked forward to answering the question, "What's your least favorite trait? That you see in yourself." Or something to that effect, it's been a while since I've interviewed or spoken to an adult. Without giving it much thought, I always answered honestly. "I dislike that I am punctual."

It's the truth! It's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad trait to have as I am not always waiting for people but also weaving ridiculous scenarios in my head justifying their tardiness.

Like today. When I waited for over twenty-two minutes in which my heart, I'm convinced, stopped beating for some time.

"Girls! Girls! Shoes and shoo-shoo it's time to go outside and wait for the bus." I congregated the two banshees in the mud room and handed them some side walk chalk. "We need to leave Jay some clues so he can find his first-day-of-school present."

I glanced down at my blackberry and noted I was about five minutes early. Just. Enough. Time. For the girls and I to draw some clues that led up to the gigantic calculator and new alarm clock waiting for my first born child on top of his Star Wars sheets.

Seven minutes later the bus's engine rumbled across our tree lined neighborhood. The girls enthusiastically ran to the curb and I took my position as the good mother photo documenting the first arrival of the school year of her eldest.

However. The bus did not stop. In fact. It kept rumbling.

We patiently waited. And waited. Perhaps the bus stop moved and I wasn't informed? "Get in the car girls!" The girls jumped into the minivan while I ran inside the house to grab THE school folder full of essential contact numbers. Because, obviously, my mom-radar was spot on and I'm forever a girl scout prepared for the worst case scenario.

I circled around the neighborhood not once. Not twice. But three times with my windows rolled down and my head stuck out as far as it could, hollering "Jay! Jay!!! Where are you Jay?" Immediately thinking the very worst, I dialed the school's transportation number while Lola schooled the Feenster about the situation. "Our brother is lost. He might be gone forever, Fifi."

"Hello?"

"Hi. My son. He didn't come home. The bus drove by our house. He's. Not. Home!!!"

"Name, grade and bus number please." The calm operator asked.

"Jay. First grade. Bus number 15."

"The buses are running a little late today."

"But. The bus just passed us. It was one minute late according to my blackberry. I've circled the block four times now."

"Please. Calm down and pull over."

"Okay. I've pulled over. Tell me where my son is please." I imagined my perfect little child in his white polo standing alone in front of the school. Or tied up in a trunk. Or abducted by aliens.

"Where. Is. My. Son????" I cried. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw Lola's face.

"You know, Mama. He might be gone forever." The child that was born to push my buttons, admitted.

"Hello. Hello. Are you there? Where's my child?"

"It's the first day of school lady. Buses are running late."

"I just told you that the bus flew by without my son."

"According to our records. That was the intermediate school bus. And it's running 10 minutes late. So your son's bus is probably running 10 minutes late."

"Really?"

"Really, lady. It's the first day of school. Buses are always late."

"Okay."

Just like clock work, 10 minutes later, Jay stepped off the bus and onto our curb.

"Jay. Jay. Jay Karwowski! I wuff you." The Feenster screamed, dressed in a leo for the third day in a row even though she's not enrolled in any dance classes.

"Jay. We thought we would never see you again." The middle child confessed.

"Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Sweet Jay. Mama was a little worried because your bus was a little late."

"Mom. It's the first day of school. The bus was late."

And just like that, brushing off a mother's heart attack, he followed the loving notes scribbled across the driveway into our house.

On my next interview when I'm being admitted to the Betty Ford clinic for the abuse of popping pills (Excedrin-migraine... my choice today) to get me through mothering not once. Not twice. But thrice. I will be brutally honest and point them here to acknowledge that the trait I dislike most about myself is... being punctual neurotic, obsessive, terribly horribly no good very bad CRAZY.

Oh.  And, you know, that (fat) picture of myself I posted online two days for the world to see that I won't link to now?  Yes.  That's me bloated in preparation for "that" time of month after inhaling $30 worth of Trader Joe's miniature peanut butter cups.  I must be the first stoooopid blogger that did that, no?  I'm brilliant.  Furthermore, I'm totally suing the PMS foundation because it should be illegal for a mother to be this emotional on the first day of school.

Carry on.

I get it.... really really get it. One to two minutes late, I have all sorts of scenarios (best left in my head and not here on your blog) going on and none of them are pretty. I gues it has to do with being extremely punctual. I'm ON TIME FOR EVERY THING... never ever ever late. always early oh and I'm one of thoe people who does a "dry run" if they are going somewhere they've never been. My dad was the same way, may he rip, he taught me well. Happy first day of school - and why do the buses need to be running late because of that?

He told me that they were taking lots of photos, on the first day of school. They were dismissed 10 minutes late.

I think parents should have been notified. About the 10 minutes. Or am I really crazy?

Um...you totally didn't do anything crazy. I would have been way more freaked out than that! And i love the photoshopped "NOT JAY'S BUS" on the school bus. Hilarious!

just remember, being a little neurotic means you're a good mother. Far too many mother's don't give a crap and way too many aren't there to meet the bus when they get home. Be a little crazy...at least they know you care!

Eessshhh... We've had that happen a few times. They didn't ride the bus, but once Pat went to pick Justin up and called me from the school, asking if Justin had walked home and he missed him. Long story short, my husband just didn't see his own kid (who was looking for the red van instead of black Grand Prix) and my HUSBAND couldn't even remember the teacher's name to give to the school secretary.

Longest 10 minutes of my life.

First, I'm now officially craving some peanut butter cups. It takes nothing but a tiny mention to plant that seed :-)

Second, many years ago, I was the kindergartner that was left on the bus . . . all the way back to the bus garage. I still remember the steam pouring from my mother's ears when she picked me up there. So, you were totally justified in freaking out a bit. I don't get why they would be running late on the way home anyway - morning, absolutely, but not the afternoon.

The buses here are always late... though for far different reasons. Usually it's because the bus got stuck behind a herd of goats - it seriously happens - or a water buffalo jumped out in the middle of the road and traffic came to a complete halt.

Then my phone rings off the hook with all the mother's wondering where their kids are... since they know we're the first drop off on the way home. Um yeah... it's a weekly occurrence!

# Pauline 2009-08-27 10:21
You know Jill... you in India and me in Ohio... things are not too too different.

Our bus COULD get stuck behind an Amish buggy or a deer jumping out into traffic.

Great! Now I'm going to have an even harder time sending my first off to school next week on the bus for the first time. Yes, I would have gone a bit crazy as well. And I'm usually the late one, but I can guarantee that I'll be there early waiting to see her smiling face as she exits the bus for the first time.

When my older daughter was in kindergarten, we moved -in March of that school year -to a neighboring school district but one where my Mom happened to live (and where I grew up.) On the first day my daughter attended this new school, I was waiting for her to get home and she never arrived. I was in a bit of a panic, to say the least and called the school. They informed me she had got on the bus and should have arrived at home as the buses had all returned to the school -empty. But I still didn't have my daughter! How could this be. Then some one asked me if my daughter knew another little girl her age -they gave that child's name -and I said yes, she lives two houses down from my Mom and that's when I found out because my daughter knew that child but couldn't remember her own bus number, the school people put her on that bus and she ended up getting off the bus by my Mom's house! All was well that ended well there ya know!

I am glad that he is home. I remember that feeling all to well. When The Chicken took the bus home from school by herself in Kindergarten as her older sister was sick. I was a nervous wreck and then they had a sub driver who told the kids they needed to let her know if they should get off. The Chicken dozed off right before our house-she woke up shortly after. When asked why she didn't let the bus driver know, "you get in trouble for talking to the driver when they are driving Mama, plus I wanted to see where all my friends lived so i could visit them later"

Hope you are feeling better today. xoxo

I am not the most punctual, but my husband is terrible. In fact, I have imagined his death more times than I can count on my two hands. It's terrible to have an overactive imagination and a spouse who can't tell time. So I can relate.

Great idea with the chalk! I bet he loved the surprise when he got home and hopefully he had a great first day at school.

Oh, I feel so much better now after reading this. I waited for my brand-spanking new kindergartener (who'd already had a meltdown at orientation on day one and tried to escape on day two) to get off the bus yesterday. When her bus was 20 minutes late, I started to really panic. So much so I was afraid to go get the phone for fear it would come and I'd miss it. When she finally got home five minutes later, I was in the middle of a meltdown. At least I know I'm not the only one. Sigh.

Oh Pauline...I think a nice glass of chardonnay about 5 minutes before the bus time s called for. It helps with homework too;)

LOVE those mini peanut butter cups from TJ's!

I think the sight of Feenster's lovely little baby thighs and butt cheeks would have been enough to make me forget about MY firstborn. So. Dang. Sweet!

I literally laughed out loud when I saw "Not Jay's Bus" LOL!! LOVE It.
I must say thot that I think my fav part of the post was the Feensters chubby little thighs and the hint of cheeks peeking out of her leotard, Aaa SO CUTE! I want to squeeze those leggies
What a lucky brother Jay is to come home to such an adoring crowd

Not crazy at all! I would have gone POSTAL! Good thing you just went around the neighborhood. Knowing me, I would have driven to the school; or followed the bus to the next stop and got ON the bus looking for my kid! Now, THAT's crazy! haha
