No growth without discontent, right? PDF Print E-mail

Her sly smile spoke volumes and the evidence was smeared over her plump toddler fingers.  She stood before me, just as my other two children did years ago, covered head to tow in diaper cream.

"Who did this to you?"  I tried to keep a straight face.

"Lola."

"No, I didn't!!! She's a liar.  Fifi, you are a liar!"  Lola screamed from the opposite end of the house.

"I not a liar. I a girl."

girl

Dressed to impress in a missmatched ensemble of dress-up clothes she desired no help from me and was determined to squeeze her feet into a pair of plastic slippers.

"Where are you going today looking fancy?  You are so adorable!"

"I not so adorable.  I a girl."

The "terrible-twos" are tragically mislabeled.  The real trouble begins when in a couple of months around the age of three, she will have more knowledge and this gives birth to the stage of discontent.  Oh you know, otherwise known as the terrible (horrible, no good, very bad) threes where knowledge triumphs peace.  It's the developmental stage where I walk around with my hands over my ears singing la-la-la-I-can't-hear-you trying to remember that discontent is a crucial step towards progress.  Right?

"You are a crybaby."

"No I not. I a girl."  Soon will be replaced by, "Mommmmmmmy.  Lola called me a crybaby and I'm not a crybaby, she is.  Sop calling me that.  Mommmmmmy tell her I'm not a crybaby.  You are the crybaby, Lola.  A poopy head crybaby. Whatever you say sticks to you like glue. Waaaaaaaaa..... I not a crybaby."

Yes, I don't know how the age two got labeled as terrible. It's definitely worse when they have more knowledge at three! I'm finding that out now :)

Yes, the three's are a world more awful than the two's. I think it is their tiny bit of knowledge that makes my expectations go up for their behavior.... but their new-found knowledge does nothing but make them more outspoken and obstinate about what they want/don't want.

I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it. ;-)

p.s. Read yr Nestle post.... whoa. It amazes me how rancorous it can get in this community! Sorry yr otherwise fun trip was tainted by all the controversy. But I am really impressed with your chutzpah asking Nestle about their stance/possible involvement with child labor issues overseas. You go, girl!

Actually, the terrible twos and threes, etc., don't hold a candle to the teenage years. They are the training wheels to riding that bike of teenage angst and such, for sure. Days and months -even years -of trying to curb the urge to permanently throttle one's progeny at times! I'm glad I resisted those urges then but boy, it was a difficult pill to swallow, ya know.

Yup, my sister and I have said many times that 2 was adorable. 3 was a whole 'nother story.

KEEP BELIEVING

Fifi is adorable - as are ALL of your children. Poopy head? If that's the worst they call each other, you've got it made.

I always called it the "trying threes" where everything they did was trying my patience as a mother. Definitely not my favorite stage...BUT, Fifi is so darn adorable, maybe it will be easier for you to endure. PS. I LOVE her jacket, do tell where it's from.

For us, these past couple of months leading up to 4 are killing me. He thinks he is a big boy yet he's still a little guy. Oy. It's enough to drive me crazy.

I have a three year old and a two year old, I think they are both going through the terrible two's sometimes! I love the "I'm a girl" responses. Too cute!

And the so-called terrible twos that don't really begin until the age of three don't really leave until the age of four, you know? ;)
