"Can I blog it?" PDF Print E-mail

The assignment read, "In December your kindergartner will be learning about family traditions ... below are suggestions for acceptable projects ... bake/read/create/demonstrate/share." A dozen or so projects for students to illustrate their family traditions was clearly written out in an easy-to-read bullet list. However, almost immediately, I noticed one potential project idea left out. A multi-media photo/story/video presentation... a blog entry! A million times easier than baking, for me.  I contacted the teacher and presented her with my idea. Of course we could blog about it.

"Name your blog." Lola effortlessly read the second step of the blogger set-up. In minutes a new blog was born and an angel earned it's wings. We sat together as bloggers and let our words fill the empty page:

"Hello. This is my family tradition for my kindergarten class.

On Christmas, my Polish family, celebrates
Wigilia. Pronounced... vi'gi:lja. In English it's
called Christmas Eve. In Poland it is one of the most special days of the year.

The tradition begins when the smallest person in our family sees the first star of the night..."

A couple of old photos deemed acceptable by the standards of a new blogger, an old YouTube video of last year's Wigilia complete with my husband dipping me in dance which made Lola squeal in delight, some words, lots of input from the kindergartner and the post was complete. The URL sent to her teacher.

Wigilia is one of the most important nights of the year for most Polish families. A twelve course meatless dinner, a tablecloth draped over some dried hay, sharing of oplatki, presenting Santa with a show of things we've learned throughout the year.  So many incredible traditions packed into one evening that only a blog entry could do it some justice. Here it is told through the eyes of a kindergartner.  Please I beg you do not comment there commenting there will give you cavities.

Part of last year's wigilia:

I'm still hung up on the thought of a kindergartner having homework projects such as a multimedia presentation. I'm so not ready for that. I remember counting buttons and learning with the Letter People.

That aside, excellent idea. I bet she felt so cool, sharing her Mama's hobby :-)

Oh. It was supposed to be an easy project.

Some parents will bake. Some will read a story.

It's much easier for me to create a blog entry & have Lola share it in class. The teacher has a lap top that projects the image on the white board.

That is the most adorable thing I've ever seen and I had to sit on my hands to refrain from commenting on her site. Is Lola available to guest blog for me some time? A link exchange, perhaps?

This is a very close tradition of the slovak tradition as well. I say slovak because my great-grandmother will haunt me if I said we were polish.

Loved the video!

SOOO Cute! I love the description of your Polish traditions...I learn something new everyday!

BTW, My daughter did something like this the other day for her science class where she had to create a blog as if she were an amoeba. It was pretty cute! Here's to a new generation of bloggers!

I love how you share your family traditions with us. I really love the fact that you now introduce the 21st century to homework. I wish we had this capability 100 years ago when I was in school. lol

I sincerely apologize, I did not read last line of post and I commented on Lola's blog. Feel free to delete it. I thought she would enjoy comments from the dot com. She did a great job on her blog, like mommy like daughter.

What a wonderful idea! But I'm kinda confused...was that reverse psychology or do you really not want us to comment there? Cause I want to.

so sweet. Is it odd that I think your kids have grown a lot over the last year. Odd since I only know them via the dot com?

I love that your kids also call it "the dot com"!

What a great project for Lola! Am I crazy or did Jay do something similar last year? (Deja vu, perhaps?)

What a neat idea.

I might have to steal this idea if/when I do a chemistry project.

That is so cute I can't hardly stand it! I'm not Polish but Christmas Eve has always been a big deal in my family too. It is when we exchange our family presents (Santa still came on Christmas morning). We make a big buffet of our favorite finger & appetizer type foods and sit around the table laughing, telling old stories and sometimes playing games. I have hosted the last couple of years and it is so much fun.

Thanks for sharing your traditions and your kids are adorable, as always!
