Sunday night my husband and I dove into bed, exhausted after driving home in a blizzard.  Leaving piles of laundry and mountains of gifts sprinkled throughout our family room.  "I will get to it tomorrow."  I whispered, shortly after tucking three children into their beds.

Tomorrow came, as promised.  The blizzard followed us home, as expected.

I had no machinery to help me tackle the piles and mountains inside my home but my own two hands.  In between tearing plastic ties free from the packaging of Barbies and downloading songs into new ipods, to keep the children home-from-school somewhat occupied, I tended to the natural disaster that was accumulating inside.  Grueling physical work of tending house after the holidays mixed with the very occasional mental tests of motherhood.  "Stop arguing!"  "Go to your room and shut the door!"  "That's special to her, leave her alone and she will stop screaming!"  "Calm down!"  "I am going to vacuum everything on this floor!"  "If you tease her one more time, I will...."  "Everyone!  Chill out."  "That's yours.  This is hers."  My hands tore through the air directing sibling traffic.

We followed the blizzard outside, as needed.

winter

It was the first time I sat down in what seems like days.  I hijacked a wooden sled that was sturdy enough to withstand a mother after the holidays and peacefully observed my children play together in a silent neighborhood.

The snow belonged to all of us. For hours.

Okay, now I'm just a tad jealous of the snow. Just a tad.

Glad you got home safely...

Beautiful! As someone who only knows sunshine (I live in San Diego!), that snow looks like so much fun. Such pretty pictures! I, too, have found that time outside tends to stifle sibling quarrels!

There are some good things about the snow! And, ah yes, the aftermath of the holidays...

Sometimes the best fun is made with good, old fashioned things! You got more snow than we did- it's been blowing around here all day and it's so cold that the ice is refusing to melt. Darn!

Wow...what must that be like...blizzards I mean. The only blizzards we have are the ones that come from the Dairy Queen drive thru window! So beautiful and cozy. Hope you, hubby and 3 kiddos had a wonderful white Christmas and Happy New Year ahead!

I can completely relate!! We did the exact same thing here. Your sweeties look adorable in their snowsuits - there is something so cute about kids bundled up so they can barely move!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to your family!

Sometimes I wish the snow belonged to me, because I love the look of it as one big blanket. After a little bit the kids trample and sled through it and BOOM! It looks like kids live here again.

Glad y'all were able to retreat to the quiet peace of the snow. I am sure no one said, "mommmmmm, I have to go to the bathroom!" right after you bundled them up!

Love the photo. It reminds me of the calm that winter can bring. The clean white snow, the silence that comes with it. And children playing and creating and forgetting about the battery operated stuff laying around.
Glad you made it home nerves intact
