She remained so quiet, I heard nothing over the baby monitor, surely she was indulging in her afternoon nap like a good little toddler. The nap that was recommended by our pediatrician who stressed the importance of a toddler sleeping until the age of three. She turns three next month. Which means this month, by golly, she's napping because that's what the doctor ordered.
"I wook like a teenager, Mama." She appeared in the kitchen twenty minutes into her "nap."
"A teenager?" "Yesh. I wook like teenager, wif dis chop stick." "It's not chapstick, Fifi. It's mommy's special long-lasting lip gloss."
The word teenager made it into her vocabulary because Dora, Sesame Street and The Wonder Pets (which occupied the older two children for all those years while I prepared nightly dinners) has now been replaced by The Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and America's Funniest Videos in the background while she plays with her ponies. Tis the life of the third child who is exposed to everything too soon by accident. Like crunchy peanut butter and high fructose drinks.
"Knock. Knock." "Who's there?" "P. P. I said pee-pee!" She throws herself onto the couch and giggles uncontrollably. "That's not funny, Fifi." "Let me tell you some-fing, Mama. It's funny to me." "How old are you?" "Five." "NO. You are two. Almost three. One, two, and almost three." I held her pinkie and thumb down, to show her three toddler fingers stained from our finger painting earlier that morning. "No. I five."
And so it begins, just like that, we flip to another chapter. The one entitled "Apparently three five year olds don't nap." One in which the third child triumphs over me (again) eager to start a new phase. I. Am. Not. Ready. In the meantime "let me tell you some-fing," I'm thinking I should replace some of our craft-time with Noggin TV time to teach her how to act three. The first "And so it, begins" was published two years ago in January. Waaaa.... hold me. Please? |

My twins napped up until the day they started kindergarten.
I can so relate to this. It drives my husband nuts that I still carry him around and brush his teeth for him. And I can't stand it when he corrects his speech. I want him to say "magich" for just a little while longer. I feel your pain.
Sarah does not really nap anymore.....and I so miss that time! She will fall asleep every once in a while...... but definitely not daily!
Good luck... she is absolutley adorable:)
At 8 I was watching MTV and Madonna videos. The Wizards of Waverly place is much more acceptable.
This was very "funny to me!"
Fifi does wook lovely.
You think I'm kidding, don't you.
Seriously, I challenge you to find one single mom who thinks Hannah Montana is a good influence. Or Raven. Or Zack and Cody.
Even if they aren't evil, they are just damn annoying.
This is why we don't have cable. Arthur and Clifford are NOT even close to being as annoying as Cory in the House.
THen again, there is Barney...
At Disney on Ice my kids kept on asking, "Who is that and what is this song" We really do not watch TV often, at all. At all. One thing I can not stand is children glued to the TV set... it makes me skin crawl. But that's just me.
However, I need NEED 30 minutes each day to get things together for dinner. And they no longer watch cartoons at nearly 8 and 6 years old. It's what they like and I think in moderation and good parenting... it's not a problem.

Great picture!
BTW- Great choice in lip color.
She's adorable!
Braden turned 3 in October. I am fully prepared to tie him to his bed at nap time, should that ever become necessary.
I feel the need to impress upon you that I AM NOT KIDDING.
Smiles!
Gobble up that yummy sweetness while she still lets you.
Oh, this is just so true! I often feel guilty that my youngest, my 4-going-on-14-year old little guy has never played with an age appropriate toy or watched Elmo on TV b/c he has 2 older brothers. *sigh*
Stopping by from SITS.

giggling.
Proud.
She's finally figured out how to climb out of her bed. I put her back in several times, unsuccessfully, and called my husband in tears.
His response? Bring home a "big girl" bed...I was not. ready.
I think phase changes like that are so hard!!
My girl's now 7, and I'm not looking forward to the next Not. Ready. moment.
Though her one request for Christmas was lipstick, so she could be beautiful. I wear lipstick about once a month! Sometimes I wonder who's daughter she is.
