And so, it begins. Again. PDF Print E-mail

She remained so quiet, I heard nothing over the baby monitor, surely she was indulging in her afternoon nap like a good little toddler. The nap that was recommended by our pediatrician who stressed the importance of a toddler sleeping until the age of three. She turns three next month. Which means this month, by golly, she's napping because that's what the doctor ordered.

"I wook like a teenager, Mama." She appeared in the kitchen twenty minutes into her "nap."

lipstick

"A teenager?"

"Yesh. I wook like teenager, wif dis chop stick."

"It's not chapstick, Fifi. It's mommy's special long-lasting lip gloss."

The word teenager made it into her vocabulary because Dora, Sesame Street and The Wonder Pets (which occupied the older two children for all those years while I prepared nightly dinners) has now been replaced by The Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and America's Funniest Videos in the background while she plays with her ponies. Tis the life of the third child who is exposed to everything too soon by accident.  Like crunchy peanut butter and high fructose drinks.

"Knock. Knock."

"Who's there?"

"P. P. I said pee-pee!" She throws herself onto the couch and giggles uncontrollably.

"That's not funny, Fifi."

"Let me tell you some-fing, Mama. It's funny to me."

"How old are you?"

"Five."

"NO. You are two. Almost three. One, two, and almost three." I held her pinkie and thumb down, to show her three toddler fingers stained from our finger painting earlier that morning.

"No. I five."

And so it begins, just like that, we flip to another chapter.  The one entitled "Apparently three five year olds don't nap."  One in which the third child triumphs over me (again) eager to start a new phase.  I. Am. Not. Ready.  In the meantime "let me tell you some-fing," I'm thinking I should replace some of our craft-time with Noggin TV time to teach her how to act three.

The first "And so it, begins" was published two years ago in January.  Waaaa.... hold me. Please?

Ha ha, oh its the way it goes. My baby brother and sister have humor far beyond their years thanks to the massive age gaps between them and us older four. Their teachers LOVE them though, so don't worry about it :)

I am laughing so hard. The day I knew my son was done with naps he spent nearly 45 minutes spreading Baby Vicks Vapor Rub all over his shirt, bed and the wall. Do you know how hard it is to clean that stuff off the wall? He had just turned three.

My twins napped up until the day they started kindergarten.

I can so relate to this. It drives my husband nuts that I still carry him around and brush his teeth for him. And I can't stand it when he corrects his speech. I want him to say "magich" for just a little while longer. I feel your pain.

Hugs and great envy. My oldest stopped daytime naps just after her first birthday. If I attempted to enforce the naps she would fingerpaint the walls with whatever substance she could get her hands on - diaper rash creams and poo being the handiest for her. Being pregnant at the time with baby #2 I was not very impressed.

I miss the helplessly funniness of toddlers. As they get older, the funnies are kinda played out, no?

It is so hard when there are older siblings..... they really do pick up things and tend to grow up much faster!!

Sarah does not really nap anymore.....and I so miss that time! She will fall asleep every once in a while...... but definitely not daily!

Good luck... she is absolutley adorable:)

They do pick up things much faster. On a positive note she can memorize and sing just about any song. She knows so much more than the others did at this age.

I'm so glad to hear that Wizards of Waverly Place and Hannah Montana are on in your house, too. A couple of my daughter's friends (the 8-yr-old!) say they aren't allowed to watch those shows. Seriously!! I couldn't believe it. I love Wizards of Waverly Place...

The older 2 watch TV for about 30 minutes each night when Im getting things together. I have no issue with them watching those shows once a day.

At 8 I was watching MTV and Madonna videos. The Wizards of Waverly place is much more acceptable.

This was very "funny to me!"

I love this. It reminds me of about a year ago, when my daughter came into me about 20 minutes after I thought she'd fallen asleep and told me, "Mama, I got messes" -- and she was COVERED in skin cream from hair down to the tips of her tights. That was pretty much her last nap. She was about 2 1/2. You made it further! Good for you. (And how hilarious is, "Mama, let me tell you some-fing"?!?!)

Disney channel is evil.

You think I'm kidding, don't you.

Seriously, I challenge you to find one single mom who thinks Hannah Montana is a good influence. Or Raven. Or Zack and Cody.

Even if they aren't evil, they are just damn annoying.

This is why we don't have cable. Arthur and Clifford are NOT even close to being as annoying as Cory in the House.

THen again, there is Barney...

You preaching to the choir. I'm not a fan of Disney anything.

At Disney on Ice my kids kept on asking, "Who is that and what is this song" We really do not watch TV often, at all. At all. One thing I can not stand is children glued to the TV set... it makes me skin crawl. But that's just me.

However, I need NEED 30 minutes each day to get things together for dinner. And they no longer watch cartoons at nearly 8 and 6 years old. It's what they like and I think in moderation and good parenting... it's not a problem.

Must be sibling influence regarding naps. Our youngest quit taking them much sooner than her older sister. Sometimes we do miss those days.

Great picture!

My oldest dropped his nap when we moved him out of his crib (around that age). But my 3 year old twins are currently sleeping upstairs. If I have my way, they'll nap until Kindergarten. They are far from easy kids - but I'm pushing the nap as a "you need it" item on our daily agenda. But I actually have a post going up tomorrow that includes a terrible story about their efforts to thwart me. So we'll see how long I can drag this out...

I was laughing so hard reading this that my husband even looked over to see and you had him cracking up. My 4yo has also been telling people she is 5 for a few years. She is obsessed with being 5. I'm very interested to see what happens at the 5th birthday. My niece suddenly wanted to be 15, like Sleeping Beauty. Hope Fifi doesn't take THAT route for you ;)

M is nearly 3 1/2 and still takes 1 1/2-2 hour naps daily. Sometimes it's a battle to get her to go to sleep, but I'm going to encourage (i.e. force) them until Kindergarten if I can. I credit daycare for her still napping - until they reach age 5 they have "cot quiet time", which is strictly enforced, and the kids usually fall asleep out of boredom.

"Tis the life of the third child who is exposed to everything too soon by accident."

Oh, this is just so true! I often feel guilty that my youngest, my 4-going-on-14-year old little guy has never played with an age appropriate toy or watched Elmo on TV b/c he has 2 older brothers. *sigh*

Jonah is growing out of his "nap time" too and it really breaks my heart!! Now he has "rest time". He doesn't have to go to sleep but he has to lay down and rest for one hour. Sometimes he falls asleep, sometimes he doesn't! But I love the 3-4 age. The funny things that come out their little mouths is sometimes just too much! I love it! Fifi is just too adorable!

Aww she's so cute!! This makes me think of my daughter, somewhere around that same time, I'd put her into her crib for a nap (at the time, she slept in a playpen sort of set up). I went about my business of trying to relax and do some laundry when I turned around AND JUMPED OUT OF MY SKIN because she was right behind me.
giggling.
Proud.
She's finally figured out how to climb out of her bed. I put her back in several times, unsuccessfully, and called my husband in tears.
His response? Bring home a "big girl" bed...I was not. ready.
I think phase changes like that are so hard!!

My girl's now 7, and I'm not looking forward to the next Not. Ready. moment.

My second definitely thinks she is as big as as her brother. Luckily he is only 5 and well pretty immature.. so she isn't too old yet.

Though her one request for Christmas was lipstick, so she could be beautiful. I wear lipstick about once a month! Sometimes I wonder who's daughter she is.
