The post where I lose all my sweat-suit wearing moms... PDF Print E-mail

I am not the most stylish mom in my hood.  Far from it actually, as many others in my Norman Rockwell-ish community have the funds to drop some serious dough on the latest threads and look much more fashionable than I.  What is up with everyone at the gym wearing Lululemon, is there a sale I don't know about? I honestly don't care about keeping up with the Jones' but I do care how I present myself.  For my own sake.

It all started with my mother making sure my undergarments in elementary school were perfect enough for EMS to see, just in case I required 9-1-1.  Years later I spent a semester abroad in Salamanca, Spain and fell in love with the idea of shopping for produce at the local market in stilettos.  No matter where I looked, women were oozing class.  I spent many summers in Europe throughout my high-school and college years and was able to distinguish an American from a non-American.  It's easy to do.

Today at preschool drop off, I took a mental note of what mothers were wearing.

Really, Adidas wind pants with no intention of working out?  No way, you really left the house in flannel pajama bottoms! You have got to be kidding me with that Tinkerbell hoodie, it's a joke, no?  When did Americans get so lazy?  I totally understand that not every mother in America is interested in fashion and I respect that.  I do.  I have loads of friends that own one pair of seasonal shoes and could care less what they look like at preschool drop-off.  I like them just as much, if not more, than my friends in Gucci wedges.

Today, I was embarrassed at the lack of presentation in one self, in America.  Women across the globe with half the amenities would never leave the house looking like three quarters of the preschool moms in my hood.  My baby sister who lived in Senegal, Africa for two years said that women did not leave their mud huts without wearing their most colorful threads and brightest jewels to milk a freaking cow, people.  They wore their finest to garden!  While moms in middle America with 2.5 bathrooms wore their pajamas bottoms outside of the house.  I really don't get it... if you do, please explain.

Obviously, I don't look like I do on Mother's Day everyday.  I don't have the extra time to straighten my hair, exfoliate, or even shower without an audience.

style0

Half the time as a mother of three I barely crawl into the shower to shave, in private.  When I remember to hydrate myself with lotions it's a very good day indeed.  I don't shower everyday.  But Gawd help me, I don't want people to know!  However, it's really not that hard to look good, if you want to look good.  It's in your hands yo.

I re-cycle my clothes. As most women across the globe do.

Style_collage1

You do not need a closet full of clothes.  You do not need to spend hundreds at the mall.  You can purchase sensible jeans just about anywhere these days and boots are everywhere.  I love throwing on a coat over an old(er) shirt.  My "Not-so-lazy day"  jacket was a whopping $20 from H&M and my "Lazy day" sweater was $30 from Old Navy!  A much better look, in my opinion, than a tinkerbell hoodie.

Recycle another outfit with some BLING!

style4

The necklace from BR outlet was discounted, the ruffle dress from the super cheap Forever 21 and the jacket at H&M.  Viola!

Leggings have become my best friend.  They have replaced the yoga pants.

style3

Do not tell me YOU can't wear leggings and a tunic with a rocking necklace and some kick ass boots.  It's a lie!  I have seen many mothers of all shapes looking quite awesome in the same outfit.  Tunic =  a $10 Old Navy weekly special.  Leggings = $8 staple from H&M.  Necklace from Forever 21.

I'm guessing if you have read this far into my rant, you are quasi interested in looking good and care about fashion.  Throw on some jewelry today and powder your nose.  Half the civilized female world can only imagine being in your shoes today.

Go on.  And.  Rock it.

We are thinking alike today, but my post is on the vanishing granny pants...

I agree. It is so important to me, FOR ME, to put some thought into my appearance. ESPECIALLY Since I stay at home.

I agree with you. Americans are LAZY with fashion. However, I don't think you are going to get me to wear leggings. Again. I left those back in the 80s...I think when you were born. hahaha

From the oldest mom on the block. :)

Love this...

I don't always dress up - but I never leave home w/o my mascara and lipstick. Bright lipstick, because it makes me feel pretty... and I won't lie, I giggle when hearing my girls comment about my lips. :)

Back in the snowglobe, I was totally a yoga pants and sweatshirt mom. Seemed easier.

Since arriving in the land of color, I have done an about face. Not always, but most often I get comments like "how do you always look so cute?"

I've recently discovered (and wish it would have been earlier) that it's all about taking 5 extra minutes to put on that kick ass necklace, lip gloss helps TONS and the leggings? You're so right!

Love this post! Since I am a WAHM by day, I am lazy at drop offs most days. However, lazy means I still shower (even if quick and with an audience), find some jeans, and some rockin jewelry to throw on (I sell high fashion jewelry too). I have found looking good makes you stand a bit taller and talk a bit nicer. Also, if they notice my jewelry, it will distract from the fact I only have Chapstick on. Keep rockin it! :)

I'm nursing a new baby with reflux, so when I get dressed in the morning, I take into consideration what I'm ok with getting wrecked. My sneaky tip - I wear garbage old clothes, but when I leave the house, I put on my cute JCrew trench - and nobody is the wiser to what's underneath.

And a little lipgloss and a cute knit hat (to hide my no-shower bed head) goes a long way...

And a Tinkerbell sweatshirt? Oh, no, baby.

Oh my goodness!! Thank you for articulating this! I live in a very small rural community. I swear, the highlight of someone's day is going to Walmart. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people that are wandering around, doing their shopping in frumpy PJ's pants or sweatpants out of the juniors section with some "sexy" word across their butt. It kills me! Jeepers...I am a 40 hour a week working mom - and I too want to be lazy on the weekends. But, even I throw on my staple jeans with a cute sweater.

It makes me want to go up to them and ask them "Come on woman - do you really think you look good with some words stretched out across your rear end? Or that the Tinkerbell or sponge bob makes you look cool? Are you rebelling? Because the bottom line is you look silly and people are laughing at you under their breath and rolling their eyes. If it was attention they wanted - they sure get it, but, I doubt it is the kind of attention that they want.

to be continued...

And, while we are at it - how about people trying the next size larger would you? I see so many people clinging to be the size they were in high school. It's ok if you were once a 4 and now wear an 8. Really. Those 4's you are squeezing your hinie in make you look fatter than you really are. Don't people realize they would look better in jeans that fit nicely and don't look painted on or with their muffin top hanging over their too small shirt that is baring a belly button piercing that should not be exposed for the world to see? I remember hearing Stacy on What Not to Wear saying that the size on the tag doesn't matter as long as the outfit fits well and is tailored nicely.

But, what I also wonder - is what kind of example are these women setting for their children - especially if they have daughters. You don't need to make a ton of money like you said nor do you need to wear the latest designer fashion to look good and put together. It is about taking some pride in who you are. Perhaps that is what is lacking? Pride? Good solid self esteem?

Oh my gracious Pauline...I could go on and on and on...

I do feel much better about myself when I put some effort into myself.

Perhaps those people feel comfortable like that. And happy? But back in the 50s most EVERYONE took pride in themselves. Still much the same all over the world. Except for here. I could go on and on too!

I left the house this morning (and every morning) at 7 AM, with 2 girls & one full bath and me cherishing my sleep I only get them up at 5:45 each morning. I take them to school in my PJ's, but when they were younger and I had to walk them in I always got dressed.

I wear Jeans, long sleeved t's and boots to be lazy. It's great what long necklace or a sleeveless sweater does to dress up an outfit.

And dear, we must go to the store so I can show you that leggings and a tunic do not look good on every body type. Trust me. Its a look that I love but even my trendy 15 year old who wants me to look good to represent her when I am out and about has told me that they don't look good on me and to please not try to wear that out EVER. (I am also sure your inner english teacher is screaming at my huge run on sentences)

But they do Heather.... they do! I have friends of all shapes and they rock the leggings. So much more form fitting. I need to find photos online to prove my point because so many people disagree with me.

In the end, the outfit only works if someone is comfortable in it. You can't force it, I guess.

Totally agree with you. Women in London, UK, Warsaw PL, Johannesburg RSA, and also in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and every single country throughout Europe -- totally and almost to a person look more put together than 99% of American suburbanites. I really had to up my game in my 7 years abroad. And now that I'm back here, people ask me how I'm so fashionable. No mystery, TJMaxx and Marshalls and some wild accessories and some thought put into it. That's all.

Great post.

You've captured the whole idea, entirely. Confidence and class. And a sense of respect for the rest of the world, surrounding you. Dressing in a schmatta in public implies that you really think that you're the centre of the universe, and that no one else's aesthetic sense is in any way important. It's very self-centered and narcissistic and childish, I think.

Well done you, for bringing people up short. I heartily approve. And, as it happens, wore a short dress with black leggings, a faux-leopard coat from TjMaxx and furry boots out today, even tho it was only 6F degrees. Brrrr! Fashion sacrifice!!! xxx

I always get a kick out of this. People dress up (well, you know what i mean) and put makeup on for their time at the gym...yet look like they just woke up to run their errands. How does this happen? I will admit, i often wear sweatshirts (under a nice winter jacket) when i run to the grocery store. But if i am going someplace where i plan to take my jacket off...whole different story!
LOVE LOVE your boots...do share your shopping secret on those!

okay...so, obviously, when I worked in an office, I showed up at carpool in my work clothing...and I was the ONLY mom there who was not dressed head-to-toe in lululemon with pumas and a coach purse. that was the standard in Toronto.

and then i started working from home. and couldn't NOT wear my lulus...because, good god, they are wonderful. and then I stopped. because it wasn't ME. and now I get dressed every day. and I'm still the only mom in the carpool line not in yoga pants...
sigh.

I bought a nice matching hoodie and sweatpants from Victoria Secret the other day to wear occasionally when I go to babysit my granddaughter since I will be sitting on the floor most of the day with her. She's seven months old and crawling. You're a cute mother and savvy woman. :D

I am totally baffled by people who wear pajamas in public. BAFFLED. But I always figured that was my fashion snobbery rearing its awful head, because I also think capris are a horrible fashion sin, but it's obvious most of the world disagrees with me. (I mean, really, who needs to look shorter AND fatter? And does that extra six inches of bare skin really make you feel cooler? I think not.)

Oh, I agree. But you know who totally agrees? Mama. Mama thinks that if someone is in pajamas for like 5 seconds after they wake up, they are mentally ill. Like, really.
She went into orbit when she saw a recent Oprah Magazine cover with Oprah sitting there in a robe over her pajamas.

I would love to be able to ooze style like you do - even on your lazy day. Me, I hate shopping. Mostly because I'm lucky to fit into a size 14 on my best day.

The reason you might see me in sweats when I was dropping the kids off at preschool is because I was on my way to the gym. Seriously. That was someplace I looked forward to every possible day and on preschool days, it meant that I didn't have to rush to get the kids out of childwatch after my workout.

But even when I dress up, it's usually just jeans. I used to wear jewelry but when clumsy-me kept scratching the baby when with my outfit-matching rings and watch, I stopped. Never got back into the habit. Maybe I should.

Thanks for the eye-opener.

You would not believe the number of students who come to class (in COLLEGE) wearing their pj bottoms. I never cease to be horrified. Seriously, a pair of soft corduroys are just as cozy. And have the merit of actually being CLOTHES.

I will respectfully say that leggings and a tunic are not okay on everyone. I look like a giant lump in an outfit like that. On the other hand, it wasn't that hard for me to figure out my own go-to outfit that is both comfy and flattering (a long-waisted ribbed turtleneck and straight-leg jeans). It's all about choosing what flatters your body type -- and then actually bothering to put it on. :)

i totally agree -- it only takes a few minutes to pull yourself together. i won't even wear PJ pants to walk to the bottom of the driveway to put my daughter on the bus! first - b/c it would embarrass her - but also b/c it only takes 3 seconds to throw on jeans.

Well, I'll tell ya, when you wear a size that begins with a "2," the only way to find anything remotely stylish is to pay investment-dressing prices, and who the heck wants to invest in being fat?

Most days, I have to settle for being clean and kempt -- although it's not as bad as it used to be; plus-sized shops have a little more variety now. When I first reached plus-size status, I'd go to Lane Bryant, and it seemed like the target audience was welfare mothers -- there was nothing there that was really suitable for work. My uniform these days is elastic-waist pants  (I am so looking forward to the day when I can wear a proper pair of pants again!) and a pullover. I know a few moms who always look perfectly pulled-together (I even know one who gardens in a dress and heels -- I simply cannot comprehend), but they are all, of course, thin.

Sweatpants, I can sympathize with, but pajamas? Really? My girls go to Catholic school, and the "fashionable" thing among the older girls is to wear pajama pants under their uniform skirts for outside recess when it's cold. Drives me nuts.

Thanks for the rant fodder!

I always love that at preschool drop off all the moms are in workout gear but at preschool pick up, they are decked out and looking cute! I do my best... :) (but know that when we go skiing, it is a yoga pants/jeans weekend!)

That would be me! I actually do work out while my kids are at school though. And sometimes I manage to get a shower before I have to pick-up, others times, not. For me, wearing my workout clothes in the morning helps me stick to my plan of working out! It's a good little push...already dressed for it!

I'm with you P...skinny jeans with boots or flats and a cute top is NOT hard to pull off. Leggings, I agree with some of the other ladies. Those are NOT for everyone! ;) I am also loving that "blazers" are back...super cute with a loose v-neck tee, some jeans and a funky necklace or bracelet. Always my "go to" look!

Great post!

You are SO right. Honestly I am guilty of slacking but I've gotten mucho better. My office is super casual and I actually stooped to the heinous level one day last winter of wearing a "nice" hoodie set TO WORK..OMG. That was when I knew I needed an intervention. ;) So I try to spiff up now even though no one cares what we wear. I care!

p.s. where did you get that first round blingy necklace? It is gorgeous!

I agree...it's just laziness. But I have my days where that is my problem. Although, I have never gone out in pajama bottoms. I think I spend so much time making sure my son is dressed nicely and his hair is done, that by the time I'm finished we need to get going. My spare time has become very limited at this point. When I do have spare time, I want to take a moment a breathe and do nothing. but I have to say that I would love to be the chick buying vegetable in stilettos. Isn't it funny how when people see someone "dressed up", it's a shock. "Where are you going? Who are you going to see?" Maybe this post will help me get my crap together!

Hmmm, I feel like sweats are okay for drop off if you are waiting until your kids are out of your hair to jump in the shower. Now if you're still wearing those frumpy clothes for PICK UP, that's a problem!

Oh and Lululemon pants are totally an investment! They are so flattering that you'll be happy to spend the money. Plus, they are reversible so it's like two pairs of pants for the price of one!

MommyTime took the words out of my mouth. You do NOT want to see me in leggings!
I wear jeans and t-shirts, jewelry's just a baby toy right now anyway. I look at the moms who dress up and think "why on earth would you dress up for preschool drop-off??" But I kind of hope this changes when I'm out of the baby phase.

I'm just not sure it's a *bad* thing, or even laziness that means that those of us who aren't into fashion don't have to pretend. The "you have to dress nice, in the latest fashion" went the way of June Cleaver. I can dress how I want and feel happy about it, even if the fashionable mamas think me lazy. It's not about laziness, it's about priorities and personal taste. You said you *enjoy* putting things together, trying different looks etc... but I don't enjoy that one bit. It's a chore and in juggling 3-4 kids, two of them babies? It's a chore I overlook in the morning drop-offs. Now, that doesn't mean I go to the store later in the day in my sweats or anything. I don't want to look GROSS. I'm just not into fashion.

YES. YES. YESSSS! Thank you for this. I agree 100% (and I love all of your outfits). I need someone to explain to me WHY women go out in public wearing pjs. Dude. I'm often in workout clothes when dropping off my son at preschool but um...I'm heading straight to the gym. Sometimes I'm still in them when I pick him up 4 hours later, but it's because I've been running around and haven't had time to shower. But I do NOT wear workout clothes out and about if I have no intention of working out. I don't consider a decent pair of jeans, flats, a cute top and a fun necklace "dressing up." That's just my daily mom uniform.

Amen and hallelujah! I swear the cartoon character sweatshirt thing is an Ohio Housewife specialty, and let us not forget the bright purple stretch pants on a bottom the size of a Buick. I even went to a job interview a few years ago where a woman was wearing a stained mickey mouse sweatshirt... to a job interview. I was wearing black pants, a cream blouse, and black blazer. High heels. Doesn't take any extra time to put on nice pants than it does jammies. In my experience, you put on clothes the same way whether they're bummy or professional.

Your previous fashion posts help inspire me to dress like a woman again instead of just a mom. I invested in myself and really updated my wardrobe with sensible, fashionable, and flattering pieces early last summer just before a vacation with the hubby to Jamaica. Then, alas, I got pregnant in July, had a miscarriage in August, and got pregnant again in September. At almost 5 months preggo, I'm back to poorly fitting maternity pants and big sweatshirts...I feel like I've gone backwards...Any suggestions for those of us carrying offspring? I realize nothing is really "flattering" when you're roughly the size of a whale, but I felt really good about myself over the summer. And apparently, my hubby thought so too!

So, this could be long. First of all, NO ADULT WOMAN should ever own a Tinkerbell sweatshirt. That's just wrong.

Secondly, I love fashion. Always have. My college major was Fashion Merchandising. I've always dressed in the latest trends, etc. BUT. I have an infant right now and it's hard to get a shower some days. I do however have a NO p.j.s in public rule. Won't do it. (p.s. typing this while still in my p.j.s but WILL change before going to pick up kiddo from school).

There are days that I look "frumpy" I admit it, but the days that I do put effort into my clothes/hair/make-up I feel SO much better about myself. It really is amazing how it changes your whole persona. (i'm rambling, sorry...)

Lastly, I agree with Heather from DE - NOT everyone can do the leggings look. You are blessed with a figure that can, me, not so much. And "skinny jeans" are right out because well, they make me look not-so-skinny!

P.S. when do find the time to go shopping so much? ;-)

ok, I'm done (finally).

For me, it's about feeling better. I just feel better when I look better. I went through a phase after baby #3 where I was the woman at preschool drop off with sweats and my husband's hoodie on who wasn't working out afterwards. And I felt like crap, didn't want to approach anyone, etc... So I try to stick to at least a nicer shirt with my jeans or if I must wear a hoodie, it's a cute one with big hoop earrings (for a sporty spice look :)).

I love this post!

I make it a point to only go out in my lulus if I'm really strapped for time, or a kid is sick, or something has really caused me to not be able to put on a "normal" outfit. I do agree with you and am often shocked by what I see other moms wearing at playgroups, school drop offs, etc. I think we all need to remember sometimes that sometimes the effort we put into how we look is a reflection of how we feel about ourselves. We need to remember - we're worth it! We are moms and we deserve to look great. And, yes, that can totally happen on a limited budget!!

Okay, I say this with all the love in the world because you are truly a lovely person...

Not all people have the same style as you. For example. Maybe Tink Hoodie Woman really LIKES her Tink Hoodie. And, maybe Adidas Pants Mom just likes to looks sporty.

I say this because I've tried many different styles and failed at everything that doesn't feel natural. I am very NON-dressy, but I feel like I do casual well. If I tried to do leggings and a tunic, it would look weird on me. I just don't have the body type for it.

I feel like it's more about being clean and put together and neat. I don't really like colorful jewelry - I stick to gold or silver, so I wouldn't wear a necklace like you've got on in your pictures. But that's just my style. And, I still haven't lost the weight from my pregnancy, so I totally do the "sporty" look on a daily basis. But, I have some make-up on every day, hair combed, earrings in.

Will you still be my friend? I wuv you. please? :-)

Of course we are still friends.

My point is that the rest of the world really REALLY really cares how they look. Years ago, our mothers, really cared how they looked.

My question is.... when did that change? Sweatshirts aren't okay IMO to leave the house in. They are made to sweat in and work out in.

Perhaps people feel comfy in them and feel great. More power to them. But it looks sloppy and the rest of the world laughs at us.

Some of the mom's I see each day shock me in how much they don't care. Some will still be wearing yesterday's pj's when they pick up their kids.

Was thinking about this today as it was my day to volunteer at my daughter's preschool co-op. I think what bugs me more than the Moms who show up in workout clothes are the moms who try WAY TOO HARD to look cool and stylish. I'm all about trying to look put together, but some of those Moms spend hours to do what? Run errands and drop off at preschool? Sorry, I'd rather spend the morning making breakfast with kids and enjoying them than spend that time primping. But then again, I live in San Diego where the pressure is ON. :)

OK, and I know no one asked me but my favorite leggings by far are from Express. I've tried lots of brands and those seem to hold their shape well. The other thing I like which is sort of like leggings are the knit skinny Joe's jeans. Anthro carries them (gray, black, eggplant) and these really are the BEST. Oh, and James Jeans skinnies too. Like leggings but jeans. Sorry, P, didn't mean to hijack your questions!!!! :)

Hmmmm. Well, there IS something to be said for looking clean and nice. But for preschool drop-off? Really? I don't think it's necessary. That said, I have never in my life worn pajamas outside of the house and even yoga pants are too pajamaish for me to wear farther than the mail box, but I have jeans with holes in the knees and faded sweatshirts and ponytails and braided hair and whatever suits my needs that day. I occasionally "dress" but honestly, I am happier with the kids when I am just wearing something that isn't embarrassing but can get mud or flour on it and not make me throw a conniption fit. Right now, un-holy jeans, long-sleeve t-shirt, some make-up, CLEAN hair, and flour from pizza dough all over me. Would I really want to ruin a nice shirt or pants with the mess that raising 3 kids allows me? No thanks. I agree that Americans are "sloppier" on a whole than the rest of the world. But I would never even pretend to want to be mistaken for a European. To worry about how everyone perceives me that much is a waste of my short time on this Earth.

But if someone is comfortable, feels good about herself without accessories...why should she have to change that? Some people are into fashion but some people aren't. It'd be like someone telling me I absolutely MUST accessorize my house with the current trends because they did that and it makes them feel better! But if I'm not into interior decorating...well, it might not make me feel the way it made them feel.
If I am showered and in jeans instead of sweats, I'm totally happy and confident.

# 3 Peanuts 2010-01-28 21:52
I agree with ou some on this Pauline and I think you can tell that MOST of the time...I dress rather nice but I will admit that some mornings I can be spotted dropping my peanuts off at school in my Lily Pj's. I have worn yoga pants on days I am not working out but I am usually planning to be home catching up on laundry and stuff that day. I don't want to be doing chores in nice clothes that could get ruined. Some days I wait to shower until after I have driven 3 kids to 3 schools. It is just easier (and I get to sleep a little later). So, while I do agree that many women really ought to try a little harder. I think we work damn hard and need to go easy on ourselves sometimes. There is so much pressure on women already to be perfect. I think the real problem is when women continually put no effort into making themselves look pulled together but I fault no one for looking sloppy at the drop-off..as long as they are showered and put together by pick up.

I have to disagree, dear friend. I think that it's very "American" of us to say "take it easy" because of all the pressure. Half of the world has more pressure than we do. There are incredibly plump women in Africa that own it. Love it. They throw on some bling and embrace their awesomeness. It's about feeling good.

Pauline, I totally agree with you! It is the same here in Canada, obviously. I like to look presentable, always. I have never even gone to the drugstore for milk without wearing makeup. While I love to wear my lulu's at home after work, or to the gym the 4 times a year that I go, I will never wear them OUT of the house, you know? It is not hard to look good! Yes, you can find good things at Old Navy and H&M, etc. My 3 store staples are: Banana Republic, Club Monaco and J.Crew, and of course GAP. Voila! :) I tend to be a sweaters/jeans sort of gal. Haven't done leggings yet. Am too scared! And yes, having spent many summers in Greece, I see how women dress - they dress to look good all the time. Regardless of income, they look good, clean, presentable. It's not rocket science! Great post. xo

It's funny - as I was reading through, I was thinking about how often I wear workout clothes now...although in my defense I do try to get the kids to the YMCA every morning so they can have some fun and I can have a little time to myself. But for sure I was much better about wearing great clothes this summer. Then I realized why. I gain weight in the Winter. I start to feel badly about how I look and then opt for safe comfortable clothes (and living in the burbs can make you lazy - the ladies at Target wearing crocs don't make me feel very competitive...) But then in the Spring I inevitably loose a size and suddenly become more excited about my closet. Well - Spring is right around the corner...guess it's time to step it up at the Y and try to get a little more motivated while I'm dressing... Even if it IS just for the ladies at Target.

That's so funny you said that. I too pack on a couple of pounds in winter while "hibernating" and all of the sudden Spring comes and I am all.... "OMG, what happened to me I no longer fit into my church dresses!"

hahahahahahhahahahahaHA! That was awesome. I love it, and need the reminder. I showered last night and when I woke up (late) this morning to take the kids to school, MY HAIR WAS WHACKO! So I threw on some super cute clothes and make-up and tried to make my hair presentable. And as my husband kissed me on the way out the door, he kindly offered to drop the kids off for me! HA!

THE best thing I did for myself this winter was to buy a very classy knit hat. OMG! I love. Love. Love!!!! It matches my coat and no one can tell that my hair isn't styled!

I was raised in a house where we were expected to be clean and dressed just to say good morning to one another. And you and I both know that the women of our native Poland cuss like sailors but look damn sexy doing it. Great post honey!

I love this post. This is something I've been trying to do for myself. I'm SOOOO stuck on jeans and a tee. While, it may be not as bad as a Tinkerbell sweatshirt - I want to look more chic. My goal is to lose about 15lbs and then buy new clothes. Or should I just buy the clothes now and see if I actually losed the weight? I love reading your blog and admire your style, home, etc. I'm so jealous LOL

I wrote about this very topic a few months ago. The blog post was picked up by a parenting blog and then by a newspaper. I, too, don't understand why the SAHM feels the need to wear gym clothes 24/7. I feel so much better when I put on "real" clothes and make an effort everyday. Also, the husband really appreciates coming home to someone sporting fixed hair and a cute outfit rather than someone still wearing her pjs at 6pm.

Great post (Luluemon is kindof great though)!

THANK YOU!!!!
You knew I would say this, no? I am so tired of women walking out of their homes looking schlumpy. Yes, I go to the Rec and work out ut I don't make it a habit of going out in public all day like this. I also will not leave the house without concealer and mascara. Yes I know a bit much but I scare myself in the mirror I don't want to scare anyone else.
So Thank you for saying recycle what you wear and change it up abit.

Bravo (clapping)... brvo (standing and clapping)... bravo!!!

My husband was always complaining that I don't wear sweatpants and tennies. Why would I, unless I'm going to work out?! We finally compromised. I found these great Nike stretchy pants that fit and feel great - I wear them to the gym, and I wear them with a $500 blazer. I fit in them on my skinny days, and they're quite forgiving after the holidays.

Oh girlie - thank you for saying this out loud!! If I see one more flannel pj bottom at school/grocery store/Target I am going to scream bloody hell! I couldn't agree with you more!! Prior to having kids I couldn't have been caught dead without lipstick and high heels. After children I sort of lost the lipstick because I like to kiss my babies so much and the high heels too because I have not quite mastered high heels and excess weight in my arms! But My hair always looks cute and I ALWAYS wear something adorable - EVEN post baby days when I wasn't feeling my best!

Rock it sister!

I must admit that I am guilty of dropping both my husband off at work and my kids off at school in my pajama pants however, I DO NOT get out of the car, and I do put a bra on at least, I have seen people at the school dropping off or picking up their children with no bras on, WTF? I agree it is laziness.

My SIL currently lives in France (again). She came back to the US for 3 years after living in France for quite some time, and she always dressed fashionably (sometimes the clothes were a bit tight for her but it was always fashionably) she states she learned it living in France for 9 years.

My one and only resolution for this year is once I get myself back in shape, to be more fashionable with out breaking the bank. As you say it can be done, if you know how to do it. My problem is, I don't know how to do it. I try to be fashionable and fail miserably.

Thank you for this post, you encouraged me to get myself back on track. :)

I must make one confession now... I don't wear heels. It seems they can cause bunions and one started forming (eek!). I'm not that old!

I did find some classy 1/2 inch heels. It's all in the attitude, honey.

I believe it is all in how you were raised. I was brought up that you never left the house, without looking presentable. My mom told me, "you never know who you might run into". I have also raised my children to dress appropriately when going out into public.

I'm somewhere in between. I would never leave the house in pajama pants, or a tinkerbell hoodie. However I do love my jeans and fitted t's. I think they are comfortable and look like I at least tired, I'm hoping anyway.

By the way I love those boots and must get a pair for nights out!

I am in my workout clothes for most days b/c I go to the gym first thing in the AM and I really don't make the time to shower. Granted I am not wearing a tink hoodie but I am in sweaty clothes that i just worked hard in. I see your point but in the same breath i question folks who are decked out when they merely are picking up kids from school ? high heels just is not practical when you are hoisting three kids in and out of a car 40 times a day. i could probably do a better job but i also make certain things a priority and that is exercise, taking care of my kids and if dressing up comes in last place I am ok with that.

Look at all the comments!!! Seriously. This is why I think you should have a fashion blog. You have a knack for it!!!

There are some adorable workout clothes and cool fashion sneakers at Athleta and Title Nine, it kind of gives us moms the best of both worlds.

My mother was just noticing the way people dress for church these days. Kind of disrespectful to come to church in pjs.

Here in SoCal, with close proximity to the Magic Kingdom, you would not believe the number of people, men included, that keep character-wear in the regular rotation. Drives me batty.

I am so fashion challenged! I do not know how it happened, but it did... slowly, over the last 14 years of being a SAHM!

I can not remember how I found you.. but I bookmarked you about a year ago, the post: O's Favorite Things 2008 (which does not even exist anymore.. so I come in through an Error page every time I come and visit!)

I need to be TOLD what to wear.. I love your "fav" type posts cause it points me in the right direction.. did you say Gap jerans at one point.. I bought those on the spot!!!..

This post is a great wake up call too! Somebody seriously should market Garanimals for Moms. (you are probably too young to know what garanimal's are!)

I need a closet intervention.

WHY am I not working this tunic with legging look? I actually have the legs and the laziness that make this the perfect outfit for me.... and I do not own ONE tunic (gasp!).

I am going to remedy this as soon as possible, Pauline. Thank you for reminding me that there is an even *more* comfortable option to turn to than my sexay jeans and pencil cords!

I agree. I loved fashion before I had my kids and I still do (just as much) today. People in London definitely dress up for ordinary occasions way more than people here in Calgary. My theory is, life's too short. I want to look/feel good as often as I can. I often feel way more dressed up than people I hang out with, but then I think, okay, whatever. Great post.

For some reason, this post has really stuck with me and made me think and I had to come back and add more. I do feel better when I dress up generally. And I am considered well dressed and quite stylish by my peers. BUT I have some extraordinarily beautiful friends who I have never, ever seen dressed up. They even come to my Christmas party a little schleppy. And you know what...I don't care because their friendship has blessed me in more ways than a cute outfit ever could. It is not about how we look (I like to look nice and you can see that on my blog) but really, that is not what it is about. It is about how pretty we are on the inside and that takes a lot more work.

I definitely agree with you. I often never leave the house, but even then, I shower, fix my hair (yes, run a straightener through it - takes 5 min) put on make-up and wear jeans with a nicer top. I can get completely ready in 15 minutes. I am even so ridiculous that even if I am not going to see a soul other than my kids, I still have to make sure my shirt, socks and belt match. I know that is a bit nutty....

Anyway, I feel better and happier when I am put together and I am just more productive! Also, if I am an unexpectedly called to pick up a kid from school, I am ready to go and not completely embarrassed to be seen in public.

I admit it, I am that mother. Actually, I'm what you would call fashionistically challenged. A fancy way of saying that I have no idea what looks nice on me and what doesn't. So I stick with what's practical, and comfortable. I want to look classy, I'm just at a loss on how to achieve that. I'm pregnant with my third child since 2006, and loathe my boring, totally class-less wardrobe, but don't know how to fix that. Having said that, your post did not 'lose' me, but instead gave me hope that perhaps I too can look classy. So from this fashion-less mum to you, a heartfelt thank you!!

My dear, you should come to my house for an intervention of sorts. :) I definitely don't go out in tinkerbell or pj pants, but I do sometimes go out in running pants to physical therapy (granted, I also just ran beforehand and can only run while the babysitters that came to watch my kids while I'm at PT are there) BUT my issue is that I have some clothes in my closet that seem cute in theory but...yeh. And, a lot of stuff was given to me but a little big. I'm mostly on a NO BUYING spree right now, so I have to make what I have work. So, when will you be in these parts? lol That, and I need an excuse to see you! I miss your adorableness!

Love this post. Whenever my Mom and I go out shopping or whatever, she says, "I didn't know we were dressing up!" And I always tell her, "I'm not dressed up." Currently, I am on a weight loss mission so I look better in my clothes. When I was 49 pounds heavier I felt I had to go the extra mile so I didn't look fat and sloppy. And now since my body looks a little better I really pull out all the stops. I'm learning to love clothes again.

Alas I cannot wear the boots as I have yet to find any that fit over my calves, even with stretching it just doesn't happen. Still trying to find a way to deal with that loss! My short cuts come down to nice jeans, necklaces and a cute hat to cover the bed head.
