"Should we have ice cream in Venice?  I hear their ice cream is good."

My father is a man of little words so much so that I can count his memorable quotes on one hand.  The quote above always makes me smile.  I still, to this day, do not know if Venice was on our itinerary in 1995 but the question presented before three feisty teenagers, in a Fiat touring Poland with their parents by force, built such an incredible rush of anticipation we forgot our differences and screamed like little children,  "Really?  Really? Can we have ice cream in Venice?"  The next morning we woke up in Venice.  A far cry from our first family vacation.

"Mama.  Tell me!  How's it going to be?"  A restless Lola squirmed in her bed tonight.

"I can't imagine it.  Describe it to me so I know what to expect."  A sensible Jay instructed when I kissed him good night.

"I pack da mermaid.  Da dolphin.  Da whale.  Da sea horse.  Da...."  A tired Feenster sang herself to sleep.

I share the love of travel with my parents.  The ones that took us to Costa Rica (waaaay before it was posh) to have fresh coconut during winter and traveled to Antigua for Easter to observe their infamous Semana Santa.  Together we smiled when observing the sun set over Machu Picchu and cried on our first family vacation with three grandchildren.  I can't count how many countries I have visited... it's over thirty, by now.  It's just our thing.  I can't even link to every place we have traveled with our kids in the last three years of this blog (go to my FAVORITES tab and look for travel).  We are blessed (aka. I drive an entry level filthy minivan and it's been 2 years since my last manicure, forgive me Father for I have indulged in something I believe in).

On Friday, we leave for our next family vacation.  Checking off yet another place, on our enormous bucket list, of places we must visit.

Any guesses on where we are headed?  (Clue:  I am consciously making it THE cheapest family vacay ever, in the history, of our vacations - don't spoil it if you are part of our family/friends and know where we are going!)  Stay tune as the OHmommy family hits the road heading across the country with blackberry updates here. Traveling across the country, yo..... surely chaos will follow.

Disclosure:  My first grader was given a free paper-cut-out of FLAT STANLEY from his teacher and asked to document his travels on spring break.  Which may or may not be the first time his mom tries coffee as she road trips across America with three children and a husband. In a filthy minivan.

As another mommy with a travel bug, I think it's ever so important to take the kids to places that others only read about in magazines and history books.

Rock on OHMommy... have a great vacay. Snap lots of photos. Twitter tons. And document everything so I can show my kids what vacations are like in the US... they've never done it. :)

I saw a Flat Stanley book at a toystore today. I need to go back and open the book and see what it's all about. I'm looking forward to hearing about your vacation, for sure.

ohhhh...where are you going? This summer's vacations are going to consist of touring Ohio for our family - with my husband's new-ish job - he's made lots of really cool Ag. connections - what's cooler than showing your kids all the cool things in their own backyard... and eventually - we'll be able to show them all the cool things in their world! But until then... there's nothing better than going LOCAL!

A) When I lived in Ohio, nobody sent me their Stanleys. Now that I live a 'burb of NY, I get a Stanley every other week. I feel like I've been on THE Flat Stanley tour for 2 years now.

B)DRIVING?! Did you say you are D.R.I.V.I.N.G.?!?! You didn't say you were driving?!?! Whoa. You TOTALLY win mom of the year in my book now. TOTALLY.

I love when you travel. Your travel tweets are my favorite. :)
Have a safe trip and make sure Stanley doesn't get left at the first hotel stop.
PS - this might be a good time to start drinking coffee. LOL

You could come to Destin, FL too... that's very close to me. (hint, hint)

Where ever the OHFamily travels, I hope you all have a fabulous time, and that the ice cream is delicious.

Driving? Oh dear.

I would guess DC, but for some reason, I don't see you going there now.

So, maybe Cedar Point? Well, no, that doesn't sound like you, either. So, I'm guessing the beach. Virginia maybe?

Good luck with the drive.

Somewhere out West? When I was younger, my parents took my two sisters and I on a three-week camping trip to CA and back. The following summer it was two-weeks to the East coast, DC, and back. I hated it at the time, but now I am so grateful. I've been to almost every state!

You could do worse than to hop on I-90 or I-80 and drive either east or west, picking various points of interest depending on how long you've got. (And, of course, if you went west, you could visit your folks in Chicago.) But if Fifi's packing pool toys, you're headed somewhere warm... a cheap flight to Vegas is out; you've said you're taking the minivan... I don't think you're taking the kids for Spring Break in Ft. Lauderdale ;) ... You said cheap, but I'm not sure what cheap is to someone used to paying international air fares... the teacher wouldn't want Flat Stanley updates if you were just heading to Kalahari... I give up!

As for Flat Stanley, I just mailed my second-grader's envelope off to her cousins in England. The lady at the post office, seeing the second-grade scrawl on the envelope, asked, "Pen pal?" and I said, "No. Flat Stanley." Unbelievably, she'd never heard of Flat Stanley, despite working in a post office. I had to explain it all to her. (In her defense, she pointed out that her kids were all grown, and she'd only just heard of SpongeBob recently.)

Have a wonderful time.
Vacation is the awesome. :P

ACROSS the country, eh? But maybe you don't want to travel too far, since you've only a week+? ;D

The ice cream is great in Venice. Your father is right, as always. (Except when your mother is right, of course. And your aunt.)

Yay!!!! Everyone has to go once!!! Just make sure you stop at a cute orange stand at the side of the road on the way home. I don't remember Disney World much, but I do remember the fresh oranges and orange juice we had on the way home. And, stop at South of the Border-it's so kitschy!!!haha!!
