I gathered my three children by their ears and forced them into the bathroom of my parent's house in Chicago yesterday because, in all honesty, I ran out of analogies.

I asked them to imagine a toilet stuffed with paper and what would would happen if another scrap was added.  "It would overflow."  One of them said.  "Precisely!"  I exclaimed.  I went about my business, re-connecting with my family over mother's day weekend, giving myself a pat on the back for my awesome analogy and superb parenting skills.  Only the house was too quiet just minutes after my important lesson in the bathroom.  I crept down the first floor hallway that once housed my parent's bedroom but now is home to Apolonia.

In broken Polish I heard three American children from Cleveland, stutter and repeat three times over...

"Prosze."  (Please)

"Cukierki."  (Candy)

"Dziekuje."  (Thank you)

"Babcia Pola."  (Grandma Apolonia)

I peeked, through the doorway and witnessed the eighty-seven year old woman dealing candy one kid at a time.  Again!  For the fifth or sixth time that day.  I watched as they quickly got rid of any evidence.  My brilliant analogy was short lived.

They had different strategies to earn their keep.  One read.  One danced.  Another talked.  A hug equaled one piece of candy.  A kiss was two.  A book read was three pieces of Mamba.  And so on.... and on and on.

It's a good thing their father is a dentist.

Because my kids ingested about fourty-five dollars worth of candy this weekend. At least they all became quasi fluent in Polish.

"Babcia Pola.  Prosze cukierki."  "Dziekuje."

"Grandma Pola.  Please candy. Thank you."

Speaking of the dentist... my 4 year old... who will be 5 on August 1st... lost his first tooth this weekend while we were away in Toronto! He sort of wrapped the seatbelt around his bottom tooth and snap... out it came. SHOCK. He's totally okay, no blood, no pain. He did get his first teeth in at 4 months old... can you confirm with your hubby that this is not unheard of? Also, what's the going rate for a tooth nowadays? The tooth fairy is leaving him $50. Because well, first tooth!!!! BIG DEAL!

I'm no dentist, but my son got his frist two teeth at 4 months. They say every child develops teeth at different ages. some (rarely) are even born with teeth.

It is early, but not uncommon.

$50?! Holy heck. I say $1 is always the going rate, unless it was removed in a traumatic circumstance (by a dentist), and then it's $2. But, if that's the going rate, I think my husband's wisdome teeth are rattling around in a disgusting box of childhood memorabilia somewhere...

Sounds like they learned all the Polish they needed. Heh!

Such beautiful photos. They make me wish that my grandmother had lived long enough to met my children. What a treasure you have before you!

Dziekuje for sharing.

Loved this -bribery to teach Polish to small children! Great idea -especially if you are lucky as you are to have the "family dentist" in the family! May your Grandma Pola continue to dole out snippets of Polish -and candy -to your kids for a long, long time to come!

I am totally okay with overdosing on candy if it includes a great grandparent.

Happy Mother's Day!

There is no person on earth more special than a Polish grandmother, except, maybe, a Polish Great-Grandmother.

It is the grandparents' right and prerogative to stuff kids to bursting with candy. They've earned that joy. It is the mother's duty to be exasperated when they do so. It's a vicious circle.
