The curious case of Mr. Smiley & the hotel down by the river PDF Print E-mail

"Mama.  I traded three silly bandz on the bus today!"

"What did you get, handsome?"

"A rare one."

My son slipped off the plastic bracelets from his wrist to show me.  Just like the plastic charms I collected in grade school - the newest craze for children are bracelets shaped in animals, dragons, dinosaurs, princesses, etc. that are often traded.  Extremely difficult to find I thank Michelle for locating them. He laid down the newest addition to his collection on the kitchen table, to admire.

"Nice!"  I acknowledged.  "Who did you trade with?"

"Mr. Smiley."

"Mr. Who?"

"Mr. Smiley!"

"Does Mr. Smiley ride your bus?" I was both shocked and curious. It's nearly the end of the school year and this was the first I've heard of Mr. Smiley who rides the school bus.  Was this a bus driver aide - was there even such a thing?

"Everyday."

"Does the bus drop Mr. Smiley off somewhere or does he stay on?"

"He gets off at the hotel.  Down by the river."

"There are no hotels in our town."  I was about to call the school's transportation department to inquire about Mr. Smiley-who-gets-dropped-off-at-the-hotel-down-by-the-river and trades silly bandz with young boys on the school bus.  But before I connected with my inner bitch to confront the school district,  I had to think like a first grader from Cleveland's remote countryside.  "Do you mean the apartment building on the river?"

"Yeah, whatever.  It looks like a hotel."

"How tall is Mr. Smiley?"

"About this tall."  He extended his hand a mere six inches above his head.

I finally exhaled.  "So, you mean, he's a student that goes to your school?"

"Duh, Mama.  Why else would he be on a school bus?"

"Why do you call him Mr. Smiley?"

"Because he smiles all the time and is nice to everyone.  That's what everybody on the bus calls him."  He looked me in the eyes sensing my confusion.  "It's funny, Mom."

And that is how I cracked the case of Mr. Smiley-who-gets-dropped-off-at-the-hotel-down-by-the-river and trades silly bandz with boys on the school bus in the remote countryside of Cleveland.

That could be the next great game show... 'Can You Think Like a First-Grader?' This was awesome. I've seen these Silly Bands at local bookstores, but didn't know they were the next kid phenomenon.

Aren't those things rubber bands? They're hilarious! And a big distraction. Even the boys are wearing them, huh? Well, can't be much better or worse than what we wore in the 80's. :)

I think I re-ignited my own daughter's interest in Silly Bandz when I was shopping for your kiddos.

So glad the Jay is back to trading on the bus (and with such a reputable guy like Mr. Smiley)...did Lola like them too?

OMG, I love that he thought the apartment was a hotel--he needs to visit me more often to get an urban vocabulary--hysterical.

Oh that is what those things are. Madeline brought one home last week and I thought it was a rubberband. Then in NYC last weekend I saw a girl wearing them all the way up her arms.
Don't you just love translating their stories?!? Amelia is the worst, it could take me hours to figure out what she is talking about. Her teacher tell me an "Amelia line of the day," everyday.

Phew! That scared me! We have a Mr. Winky at church. I haven't cracked the case yet, but I'm afraid it won't have a happy ending. Lots of adolescent boys around that have no manners....

My first grader came home on the bus with her first bracelet like that today. Where did "Michelle" locate them, anyway?

So sweet!
I am so happy that our school banned Silly Banz because they were so distracting. Not to mention stupid.

I know exactly what Jay is talking about. I once saw an eagle flying along the river across the street from the 'hotel.' I wonder if Mr. Smiley saw it? Silly Bandz are great ... my daughter came home with a few that were given to her by classmates. They're so inexpensive, and they can be found at CVS, Playmatters, Claire's, Borders, and even the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo! Now she has enough to share with her friends. It cracks me up that schools ban them. They're harmless.

Love this post. My daughter has been telling us for weeks she wants to eat at "Belle's House", and we couldn't figure it out to save our lives.

But...tonight...it hit me. She was asking us to take her to Taco Bell. Another case solved...Sheesh.
