Pinch me, please. PDF Print E-mail

The other night I gathered my three children and read them the children's book I wrote. Do you know how strange that is to type and to say out loud?  I read the book that I wrote to my own children.  Pinch me! Lola, my most animated child, traced her finger over her character portrait in the book and squealed with delight.  Jay, my practical son, asked me if our local library would carry it.  Feenie, my wild banshee, planted a gentle kiss on my forehead.  Upon hearing their real names in Polish read out loud for the first time Lola exclaimed,  "This story is really about us, Mama!"

"Yes.  This is our story.  Ours forever."

I've shared with you the moment I decided to make this dream a reality.  Let you peek at the illustrations in progress.  And now as the book is being printed somewhere in middle America (made in the USA!) I couldn't help but prematurely showing you a glimpse of the website scheduled to go live this weekend.  Because, by golly, I am heads over stilettos excited. Like a kid in a candy store excited.

wigiliawebsite1

Screen shot of website designed by fellow Clevelander, Mark G. Davis.

The title: Wigilia (vee-GHEEL-yah) -  A tale about a Polish-American family on Christmas Eve

The description: Learn how three Polish-American children celebrate Christmas Eve in this charming tale that both entertains and enlightens readers about age old Polish traditions.

Pinch me.  This little dream of mine is quickly becoming a reality.  My three children are not only proud of what I've done thus far but are also inspired and in return are feverishly working on their own manuscripts.  Nothing in the world makes me smile more.

I have a question. Do you speak Polish to your children? I have a feeling you don't. Thats sad! YOu probably do speak it yourself but I guess don't want your children to have the gift of another language. Thats why its so surprising that you would be so imment to write a book on your/their culture when its obvious you must be to lazy to teach them their language. Hope you don't plan on going to Poland with them. No wonder Polish people in PL laugh at how stupid Polish Americans are. Can't even learn a another language. You know there is a whole other world our there with other countries and other languages. Oh well.

Talk about an argument with loaded and prejudiced assumptions... There's only one person that sounds stupid in this thread, and that's you.

# Kasia 2010-11-04 13:00
Furthermore, Culture is dynamic and always changing, from generation to generation and family to family. Pauline's children are NOT Polish residents. They are American children with a strong Polish background. Therefore, this is the story of THEIR culture, of kids growing up in the United States in a family full of immigrants. This is HER culture. No one is saying its a book about Poland. It's a "tale." Its a book about American children with Polish heritage, one that her children herish. And just as myself, there are MILLIONS more just like us.

Well, it's obvious you're not a regular reader.

So I feel confident in saying for the rest of us that are...

Screw you K, you should really do your research before making WRONG assumptions and thus making yourself look like an ASS.

If YOU weren't so lazy and learned to write a little better, you too perhaps could write a book. Nothing wreaks of envy more than your comment and I hope Pauline will feel flattered.

Your comment actually gave this post even more publicity so thank you!

K- I really think you should read over what you write and then think about how you sound because, to me, you are clueless to this blogger. Next time, please, save the blogger heartache and her loyal readers the pain of reading the rudeness that you have written and just don't hit SEND.

First, FIRST. So many congrats. I am so happy for you, and it is in no way surprising, because you are simply amazing. Truly.

Secondly, to the rude comment above, it's a shame. A shame that the commenter has clearly not been a reader of your site, to see the beautiful posts you write about your family, your trips to Poland. How you pass down your amazing recipes to your children, and the step by step pictures of their little hands picking up the traditions. It's a shame that, they too, struggle with language, and miss out on your amazing stories lined with polish translations and sayings.

Don't let them for one moment ruin the happiness you should be feeling right now.

Congrats again!

Congratulations ohmommy! Getting published is awesome!

Now onto more pressing matters. As much as you are not supposed to feed the trolls and you have nothing to prove to the one consonanted named troll, but a cussing out in nothing but polish is definitely warranted. Chances are the idiot behind the consonant will have no idea what you said, because hypocracy is the name of a trolls game.

P, don't let the haters get you down. We're all terribly excited for you and it is 100% obvious to anyone who takes 10 minutes to read some of the archives how invested you are in passing down your Polish heritage to your kids (and your readers - can you say Bigos?) and how great you are at creating new traditions out of the old by mixing the customs of your homeland and theirs.

Don't let K take away your pride in what you've accomplished. As I think you would say to your kids "Are you proud of you?" that's all that matters.

I loved hearing about your family's traditions, loved reading about them again, and we will LOVE to own and cherish your book. I'm certain that your family is so proud, and you should be as well. Congrats to you!

It's interesting that my only thought when I read "K"'s comment was that it must have been left by a very unhappy person. Just like we tell our children about bullies--they're just so unhappy inside. So sad.
