Winner: Here are your random numbers:   50 Timestamp: 2011-02-14 13:21:24 UTC Congrats to # alimartell

My laptop died last month. I knew it was on it's last leg so I scrambled to save every photo, video and document onto my external hard drive. With everything saved I walked into Apple's Genius bar and begged them to nurse my baby back to health. "Of course we can restore it. It will be just like new. We'll have to erase the hard drive though."  No problem, I told them waving my trusted hard drive before them.

On the drive home I started to panic. I started to twitch. Before losing it completely, I pulled into an empty parking lot and emailed a friend in Australia. "My computer died and although I saved all my photos, videos and documents - I totally forgot to save my applications. Including your photoshop actions. I. Can. Not. Live. Without. Them! Help me Rachel, please." Rachel responded within the hour emailing me the actions I purchased from her years ago. And I finally relaxed.

What are photoshop actions? I passionately spoke about them at Blogher 2010 in the session "How to edit your photos and make them 10x better" and posted my power point presentation here (including instructions and free actions found online). Essentially photoshop actions are formulas that professional photographers create (taking a dozen steps and lumping them into one action) so that an amateur photographer, like me, can take a photo....

photobefore

and with one click make it extraordinary...

photo

Do you see a difference between the two?

That's why I frantically pulled over and emailed Rachel. Professional photographer I am not; but, her actions trick everyone in believing that I am one. Pioneer Woman's free photoshop actions do the same. Actions make photos pop.

Now. Before you scream at your screen saying "But, OHmommy... photoshop scares me and the free user-friendly picnik photo editing is good enough for me." I'd like to insert that I self taught myself photoshop (checking out "Photoshop for Dummies" at my local library) and later took a "Photoshop 101" class at the local community college where I actually knew more than the "professor". Basically. It's really not that hard. You are better off checking out a book from the library than wasting money on a community college course. Photoshop is user friendly, if you have time to play around. I won't lie, it's intimidating at first but addicting afterwards. You can download a 30 day free trial of photoshop here and check out a book at your local library.

Back to Rachel. Back to the Genuis Bar.

"We restored all of your applications. I knew you worried about those."

"Yes!"

"We were able to restore everything."

"You were?"

"Yes."

"Even my photoshop actions?"

"Yes."

The Genius bar restored my beloved Rachel Devine photoshop actions. WOOT! And an email file containing $160 worth of amazing photoshop actions (the ones Rachel emailed me during my panic attack) is now up for grabs. A giveaway. Although not transferable Rachel allowed me to pass them onto you. Her photoshop actions are priceless and they are all yours. Just describe the photo you would want to "photoshop" to perfection for your chance to win.

That is all! It's photo editing for dummies worth $160 and it's all yours, just describe a photo in the comments below.  Contest ends 02/10/11 at midnight where one commenter will be chosen by random.org.

Oh, this is an easy question! There is a picture of my great-grandmother in Berlin in the early 1930s. She is simply breathtakingly beautiful in it. She's wearing a hat and her hands are clasped and she is in the middle of a square and there are pigeons in front of her. She was on her honeymoon and she is smiling and happy and she looks gorgeous. :)

As a fine art photographer I use actions on my of my shots, and do at least light post processing on anything I show publicly.

Rachel's actions are beautiful, they'd be fabulous on some of my nature vignettes, and of course on shots of my kiddos (when I can get them to stay still and actually let me shoot them).

The pictures of my baby birth. Days before I was playing with the camera settings and I let a preset white balance. When the moment arrived I totally forgot and my husband took all those magical pictures that now are completely orange and with a lot of noise.
They are special, anyway, but I am sure Rachel's actions could do magic with them. :)

I'm 18 and a budding photographer (and a big fan of Rachel's work!) I am so fortunate to have such amazing parents who have supported my goals and aspirations; they helped me buy my first DSLR last year and it hasn't left my hands since. Even so, with all the pictures I have taken, I rarely step from behind the camera to be in the photo myself. My Grandma always mentions that what she wants more than anything is a good photo of her grandkids to display and show off (of course, my mother seconds this!). There are three of us and we haven't all been in a photo together since we were kids (various things have gotten in the way of us getting together!) I finally bought myself a remote for my camera to take the photo, and my Grandma recently gave me an old tripod of hers to use, so we secretly got together to take the photo. Now all that is left is to edit the photo to perfection! I want to surprise her with a blown up framed version to hang on her wall, but I want the photo to be absolutely perfect! I know she would cherish the photo without the editing, but it would make it that much more special; something she could see as she walked past in the hall and smile. Of course, she would also be so proud and eager to show it off to all her friends at church! (something she does often with the pictures I take!) Sorry for such a long story, but this would so much for both her and myself. :)

My photography stinks, and I usually beg or barter with a good friend to get a good photo of my kids so I can handcraft a decent holiday card each year. At the same friend's recommendation, I purchased a basic DLSR camera and love it. However, my photo skills are less than stellar. Your giveaway sounds great, but I don't have a good photo in mind. One of the commenters above deserves to wim more than I do. I'll just stick w/ begging my friend for photo favors :-)

A family picture from Halloween. WE NEVER get a shot of the 5 of us and I insisted we do this last Halloween. While it is cute I think it could look so much better with a little editing. Thanks so much!!

Thank you for posting this! I've always loved your photos at your blog. A photo I would like to photoshop to perfection are some pictures I actually took recently of my 2 boys taking a bubble bath. I recently bought a Nikon D9100 but feel like I'm just taking "basic" pictures with it - nothing fancy or awesome looking at all! I'd LOVE these photoshop actions more than you know :)

I love taking photos, but my husband not-so-much. We have a 3-month old daughter and I'm not in any pictures with her. I have to beg him to take pictures of me and her together. He finally did last weekend when there was a smidge of sun shining on Cleveland and the pictures are lovely! I've received many compliments on them. I would use the actions to boost up a picture of me holding her up. She is looking straight into the camera and I'm looking at her with a huge smile on my face. :)

What a perfect birthday present from OhMommy to ME! I am completely reliant on actions b/c I have a ghetto point and shoot camera. I have ONE picture of me with my four kids. Just ONE. And I would love to run a couple actions on it. I need more action in my life.

I have a favorite photo I took with a simple point and shoot. It is of my two youngest as we were walking to school. My daughter was riding her bike and my son was chasing her. They got a little far ahead and I called to them to turn around and come back. Suddenly, the light from the rising sun was behind them, they were laughing, and the whole scene struck me, so I knelt down and snapped the shot. The beauty of my children's care free expressions as they frolicked in the morning was just priceless. I have it on my blog in the sidebar so I can look at it every day. Making that one pop would be astounding!

I discovered the delightful utility of Photoshop actions from one of your tweets and have collected a number of free and paid actions that I use all the time. Thanks for sharing your expertise. It's really helped me improve my published photos.

But if I had to choose one, it would be my son on his first day at college, slouched back in an easy chair in the library waiting for his check-in time. It captures the insouciance of youth that I remember from my own college days.

There is a photo of my newborn son that tells the whole story of his birth and early days in the NICU. He was in the incubater and my husband had just reached in to touch him. Then my son opened his eyes big and bright for the first time and grasped on to two of my husbands fingers with both fists. The photo frames my sons face and his hands grabbing onto daddy's hands. I would love to use some photoshop actions to emphasize the brightness of my sons eyes and the sparkle on my husbands wedding band and the contrast between the rough calloused skin on my husbands hands and the soft smooth skin on my sons cheeks.

There she is in all of her glory, my three year old at her finest. On a swing is her favorite place to be. With her glittering princess crown in place, her pink fluffy tutu tucked beneath her, flying high in the South Carolina air! Her smile is contagious, as her enthusiasm draws you in for a close look at those baby blues! That palmetto tree behind her is just another symbol of where we belong!

You have inspired me to try to finish my photobooks, so there are TONS of pictures I would apply this to right now. But if I had to pick one, I have one of my second boy from when he was a baby crawling on the floor with the sunlight streaming in at his side. It came out a little shadowy, but I've never gotten around to editing it.

I really do need to learn photoshop. I've found that I have an intuitive talent for composition - but that's about it. I just turn off the flash in natural lighting and hope for the best. After seeing your presentation at BlogHer, I was inspired to learn more. Now I just need to follow up on that thought.

My favorite "lucky" picture of this summer is of my oldest son. He was laughing and pushed his chubby fist out to flash me the thumbs up. Somehow the picture I took was a swirl of background greenery, a smiling face with clear eyes and white teeth, and front and center and larger than anything else in the shot, his perfect little hand.

99.9 percent of the photos I take of my son, Sam (19 months) need....um...help. I love posting photos of my family on my blog and almost always use the picasa editor or picnick. I take hundreds of photos a week and get maybe twenty "keepers" out of the lot. Isn't that how it goes?

I'm having our third baby in May and would really love to learn something new before the world is turned upside down again.

Love photos, love blog, love Classy Chaos.

I resigned from a 9 year banking career to stay home with my daughter and newborn son. I have decided to take my passion for photos and memories and direct that passion towards a photography career. I have a large extended family and have been snapping photos of them for years on my DSLR. The photo that I would first give attention to is a picture of my daughter with her baby brother. Unfortunately this pic looks best in black and white because I didn't quite get the white balance right and don't know how to fix it. Would love to win...

My absolute favorite photo is one of my youngest son. He was born seven weeks early & spent his first week of life in the NICU. My husband is in the Navy & was underway for the birth. The only thing I could think of to bring my husband closer to us that day was my wedding ring. I took the bands off my finger & placed them on Rylen's foot. I snapped a picture with my Rebel, not knowing that picture would end up meaning so much to us. I'm participating in an online class this month & yesterday's prompt was then & now. While looking for this particular picture to help show the huge differences in my little 'Zilla from birth to eight months old, I realized that the majority of the photos from his birth have somehow disappeared off my laptop, including this picture. Thank goodness I have it on Facebook, but the quality is horribly lacking. I'll be using my actions to try to make the Facebook version look as amazing as the original, but even if it doesn't, I don't think it matters very much. I'm just so grateful that I was able to find it again at all.

I would love to be able to use these actions to edit my wedding photos...from 3 years ago. My husband's cousin took our wedding photos and since I was a photographer myself, she pretty much gave me the raw photos so I could edit them how I wanted. Of course, I have spent my time editing all the other weddings and photo shoots I have done but have lost time for mine. Having the actions would make it so much easier and quicker...then I might could put them in a Leather Craft album!

this question is hard for me because i have thousands of photos! i think there are 2 photos of my husband's and my grandfathers that are extremely old and could use some serious restoration. they are both snapshots that have degraded over time and various members of our families have scanned them and reprinted them. they hold a great deal of sentimental value, more than can be put into words.

oh. rachel's actions. swoon. i would love to have them. i've been oogling over them ... but just bought a few others so can't justify it. yet. (and i love her AND her photography.)
so. a photo. hmm? i don't think i can describe just one. each and every photo is a memory. good. bad. frustrating. it's a canvas that i can transform from plain old picture to spectacular image. even if i'm the only one that sees the spectacularness. because it means something to me. i have a photo of my 3 kids. each doing something completely different and NOT AT ALL looking at the camera. and it's so beautiful to me. because it's them. it's the moment we had together. it evokes something in me greater than just looking at a picture. they are my future. and each of them holds this individuality in them that can never be replicated. it reminds me how much i love them. even when they are driving me BATTY. simple enough?

I want a nice wedding photo so bad! My Husband and I were married at the courthouse just the 2 of us. The only pictures we have of our big day are taken with an iPhone and a crappy point and shoot camera that the judge or our witness quickly snapped. We won't ever be able to afford a real wedding celebration with real photos, so I would LOVE to be able to make one of those bad photos worth framing for our home.

I'm a big fan of Rachel's, and was lucky enough to attend her beginners online course last year. I haven't been able to afford purchasing her actions since then, much to my disappointment.

The photo that I would love to use her actions on is a self portrait. I am always behind the camera taking shots of family and friends and I have very few pictures of myself. Rachels actions would definitely help a girl out! ;)

I just started grad school this semester and I'm playing with Photoshop for the first time. It IS intimidating, but I know I can master this beast in time.

If I had her actions, I have a picture I took of my mom with my kids before she passed away. They're all smiling, but it's way overexposed from being taken outside in the Florida sun.

I'd love to bring it back to what I saw that day with two little boys and their Granny.

I have an amazing photo of my daughter when she was 2 (now six) standing in front of the pure white dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is one of those magical moments when you catch a pensive look on your child, hair blowing in the wind, and surreally beautiful background. I've had it blown up and framed and everyone comments on what a great photo it is, but I can tell it is washed out and should have been sufficiently edited before printing. It needs some pop!

Rachels actions would be awesome- Thanks so much for the opportunity!

Easy choice: An absolutely adorable photo of my grandparents enjoying their last anniversary dinner together before my grandma passed away. It's already a favorite, but I would love to make it even more special.

Oh my!! How I would LOOOOVE these Photoshop actions!! Photo editing for dummies?? That's me! I've messed around and messed around with Photoshop, but the learning curve is high for me.

I know *exactly* what photo I would love to make "pop" with these actions! It's a photo of my very beloved house rabbit, Martin, who has passed away. It's my favorite photo of him -- it captures his personality perfectly. I was a DSLR newbie when I took it, so I'm sure the actions will help make me love it even more than I already do.

Of course, I would love to use the actions on tons of other photos, but that is the single photo that immediately came to mind that I wish I could liven up.

Thank you for this opportunity!

Oh, my gosh, that sounds like a dream come trueeee!!! Where do I begin? Maybe I could photoshop all the 5 lbs of butter off the sofas in that picture of the twins after I caught them in the living room throwing butter balls... or all those photos of them that would look so professional with your help!

I would choose a picture of my dad and I when I was a young girl, maybe I am about 5 years old. The photo is dim but I can remember the moment vividly...I love photos, my dad has been gone now almost 12 years but through pictures his memory lives on.

I'm currently teaching myself Photoshop, and it is amazing how miraculous actions can be!

I would dearly love to have this group of actions for the photobook I am working on, tracing our ancestors to the present day. I hope it will be a family heirloom for my kids and I would like to make it as nice as I possibly can.

One of my favorite photos is one I took of my neice a few winters ago. We were outside playing in the snow, and I snapped a close up of her. The lighting was perfect, bright, but not shadows, and she had the cutest pink flappy eared hat on. She has a cute little grin on her face and her blue eyes just sparkle.

I would love to use Rachels actions on EVERY photo! :0)
but, really, I am doing a 52 Weeks of US project on Flickr that I would love to use the actions on, so far it is photos of my familie's daily (well weekly) life. Rachel's actions would really make them shine. I'm planning on making them into a book when I am done...

The picture is the first one I took after my son was born. Not the first photo taken of him, but the first one I took of him. It was after all the commotion was over and my husband was asleep on a roll-a-way bed and I was holding our sweet little bundle in the quiet of the night. He wasn't crying and was sleepily starting at me. I snapped the photo with my iPhone and it's still my favorite to date. However, it's a little grainy and the lighting didn't do it any favors. I'd love to improve it.

I was going through photos of my 14year old for his jr. high graduation yearbook ad--and found some that sooo need that special pop. He has beautiful eyes and I would love to see them pop against the blue sky in Muir Woods with the tree next to him. It is already a great picture, but would love to make it really go WOW!

Iam a young aspiring photographer, and I actually have tons of beautiful photos I could use Rachels amazing actions on.My photos often lack a certain kind of color pop I look for.Rachels photo actions give that desired look.I have a really great photo of a fawn with a big polished looking nose(a little ray of sun made a shiny reflection on its nose). The photo still sits in a file on my computer with a bunch of other photos that just needs the right touch.I managed to get a great exposure even though the deer was moving a lot. It was those once in a lifetime kind of photos because as soon as I pressed the shutter button.. the fawn smiled at me a bit. :)

okay, okay, okay already.

I hate photoshop. Actually, I've never gotten that far... I"ve tried PS Elements twice and it drove me away.

But now since you say it's so easy, I'll give it another try. I did get some books from the library but didn't get very far. Maybe it was the toddler and baby climbing all over me...

I would love to use PS to edit some photos I took at a birthday party recently. I had to use a really high ISO so I'd like to get the skin of the kids looking less... orangey.

I HOpe I win!!! Thanks for giving this away!!!

I would love to win the set of actions. Our two girls were both born in different provinces in China. We have many tourits type and heartfelt (like the day we saw and held each daughter in our arms)pictures taken from both adoption trips. Because they were taken using a P & S camera, I would love to see what I could do with these actions in helping to vividly capture their place of birth.

Oh I know exactly what photo I'd love to edit to perfection. It's of me, my mom, my grandmother, and my daughter - so four generations of women. We're on our way out the door to the airport after spending a great weekend together. None of us look all that photogenic but we look tired and happy from the trip. It's a great moment. Unfortunately it was taken indoors with a crappy flash so it's a really blah picture. I'd love to make it frame-able!

Hooley dooley, how are you going to choose? Some of these stories in these comments made me tear up! My own story is about forgetting to use macro settings when my first baby was born. Lots of blurry shots that I took in the hosptial bed, looking down at her, absolutely aghast at her beauty. Thanks for offering up this fantastic prize, Pauline.

Wow - Photoshop is one of those personal goals of mine that I just never have "taken the plunge" but, after reading this, I am determined to be a better shutterbug by the end of the year. A photo I would LOVE to edit is one of a dear friend of mine who passed over 20 years ago. It was taken when we were teens and I think her parents would love it.

Like you, I've recently begun teaching myself Photoshop as well. The primary reason being that I would desperately love to restore several damaged, aged, and very worn photos of my father from when he was a toddler and a small child. There are only 3 pictures, and they are the only pictures of him before his 20's. I consulted a professional photo restorer and even though having these pictures restored would be priceless to me and my family, the price he quoted me was ridiculously inflated and not an amount any of us are able to hand over. So I decided I would try doing it myself. I'm still learning, but from everything I've learned about the PSActions, having something like this would be phenomenal! How wonderful of you to do something so wonderful for your readers!

My favorite photo is the one I took of my daughter at age 2 walking hand in hand with my husband in his Army uniform (rifle and all) after his deployment ceremony. The sea of camo was breathtaking and in the midst of it was my little blondie with fuschia patent leather Mary Janes and the perfect little pigtails walking with her #1, her daddy.

Do you know those websites?

www.thecoffeeshopblog.com/
shabbyblogs.com/

They are full of free stuff and tutorials! Great for dummies, too :-)

I use only GIMP for editing my pictures... It's pretty good for a free software. Of course you can't compare it with Photoshop, but still.... it's a great software!

Hugs,
ewa
