My laptop died last month. I knew it was on it's last leg so I scrambled to save every photo, video and document onto my external hard drive. With everything saved I walked into Apple's Genius bar and begged them to nurse my baby back to health. "Of course we can restore it. It will be just like new. We'll have to erase the hard drive though." No problem, I told them waving my trusted hard drive before them.
On the drive home I started to panic. I started to twitch. Before losing it completely, I pulled into an empty parking lot and emailed a friend in Australia. "My computer died and although I saved all my photos, videos and documents - I totally forgot to save my applications. Including your photoshop actions. I. Can. Not. Live. Without. Them! Help me Rachel, please." Rachel responded within the hour emailing me the actions I purchased from her years ago. And I finally relaxed.
What are photoshop actions? I passionately spoke about them at Blogher 2010 in the session "How to edit your photos and make them 10x better" and posted my power point presentation here (including instructions and free actions found online). Essentially photoshop actions are formulas that professional photographers create (taking a dozen steps and lumping them into one action) so that an amateur photographer, like me, can take a photo....
and with one click make it extraordinary...
Do you see a difference between the two?
That's why I frantically pulled over and emailed Rachel. Professional photographer I am not; but, her actions trick everyone in believing that I am one. Pioneer Woman's free photoshop actions do the same. Actions make photos pop.
Now. Before you scream at your screen saying "But, OHmommy... photoshop scares me and the free user-friendly picnik photo editing is good enough for me." I'd like to insert that I self taught myself photoshop (checking out "Photoshop for Dummies" at my local library) and later took a "Photoshop 101" class at the local community college where I actually knew more than the "professor". Basically. It's really not that hard. You are better off checking out a book from the library than wasting money on a community college course. Photoshop is user friendly, if you have time to play around. I won't lie, it's intimidating at first but addicting afterwards. You can download a 30 day free trial of photoshop here and check out a book at your local library.
Back to Rachel. Back to the Genuis Bar. "We restored all of your applications. I knew you worried about those." "Yes!" "We were able to restore everything." "You were?" "Yes." "Even my photoshop actions?" "Yes."
The Genius bar restored my beloved Rachel Devine photoshop actions. WOOT! And an email file containing $160 worth of amazing photoshop actions (the ones Rachel emailed me during my panic attack) is now up for grabs. A giveaway. Although not transferable Rachel allowed me to pass them onto you. Her photoshop actions are priceless and they are all yours. Just describe the photo you would want to "photoshop" to perfection for your chance to win.
That is all! It's photo editing for dummies worth $160 and it's all yours, just describe a photo in the comments below. Contest ends 02/10/11 at midnight where one commenter will be chosen by random.org. |

Rachel's actions are beautiful, they'd be fabulous on some of my nature vignettes, and of course on shots of my kiddos (when I can get them to stay still and actually let me shoot them).

My photography is available for purchase - visit Around the Island Photography and bring home something beautiful today!
They are special, anyway, but I am sure Rachel's actions could do magic with them.
A photo I'd love to have fun with is a great picture from our family's trip to Alaska.
I have the most amazing candid picture of me, my mother and my step-daughter laughing while my dad was trying to take a picture of us on our last vacation in Disney. I would love for it to look it's best.
thanks for another awesome givaway!!!
But if I had to choose one, it would be my son on his first day at college, slouched back in an easy chair in the library waiting for his check-in time. It captures the insouciance of youth that I remember from my own college days.
I would LOVE to win this so that I can get back on track with my photos, and concentrate on taking better ones!
Thanks for the giveaway!
So I think I definitely need that action package.
What a great giveaway.
My favorite "lucky" picture of this summer is of my oldest son. He was laughing and pushed his chubby fist out to flash me the thumbs up. Somehow the picture I took was a swirl of background greenery, a smiling face with clear eyes and white teeth, and front and center and larger than anything else in the shot, his perfect little hand.
I'm having our third baby in May and would really love to learn something new before the world is turned upside down again.
Love photos, love blog, love Classy Chaos.

so. a photo. hmm? i don't think i can describe just one. each and every photo is a memory. good. bad. frustrating. it's a canvas that i can transform from plain old picture to spectacular image. even if i'm the only one that sees the spectacularness. because it means something to me. i have a photo of my 3 kids. each doing something completely different and NOT AT ALL looking at the camera. and it's so beautiful to me. because it's them. it's the moment we had together. it evokes something in me greater than just looking at a picture. they are my future. and each of them holds this individuality in them that can never be replicated. it reminds me how much i love them. even when they are driving me BATTY. simple enough?
Thanks!
I have a picture of my neighbor's daughter standing in line amongst a slew of children from Africa waiting their turn on the slip n slide. It is the most wonderful photo untouched. Imagine the possibilities with a little photoshop makeover.
Thanks!
The photo that I would love to use her actions on is a self portrait. I am always behind the camera taking shots of family and friends and I have very few pictures of myself. Rachels actions would definitely help a girl out!
I have a super cute shot of my daughter in her Halloween costume, and I'd love to make her eyes pop.
PS Glad you got the trial version to work!
If I had her actions, I have a picture I took of my mom with my kids before she passed away. They're all smiling, but it's way overexposed from being taken outside in the Florida sun.
I'd love to bring it back to what I saw that day with two little boys and their Granny.
Rachels actions would be awesome- Thanks so much for the opportunity!
I know *exactly* what photo I would love to make "pop" with these actions! It's a photo of my very beloved house rabbit, Martin, who has passed away. It's my favorite photo of him -- it captures his personality perfectly. I was a DSLR newbie when I took it, so I'm sure the actions will help make me love it even more than I already do.
Of course, I would love to use the actions on tons of other photos, but that is the single photo that immediately came to mind that I wish I could liven up.
Thank you for this opportunity!
Which photo? Oh geez, ALL OF THEM. ha does that count? I have a lot of old photos of my first daughter that I'd love to sit down and re-edit (or, edit to begin with- a lot of them are sooc!)
What a great giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win.
I would dearly love to have this group of actions for the photobook I am working on, tracing our ancestors to the present day. I hope it will be a family heirloom for my kids and I would like to make it as nice as I possibly can.
but, really, I am doing a 52 Weeks of US project on Flickr that I would love to use the actions on, so far it is photos of my familie's daily (well weekly) life. Rachel's actions would really make them shine. I'm planning on making them into a book when I am done...
Thanks,
Maria.
I hate photoshop. Actually, I've never gotten that far... I"ve tried PS Elements twice and it drove me away.
But now since you say it's so easy, I'll give it another try. I did get some books from the library but didn't get very far. Maybe it was the toddler and baby climbing all over me...
I would love to use PS to edit some photos I took at a birthday party recently. I had to use a really high ISO so I'd like to get the skin of the kids looking less... orangey.
I HOpe I win!!! Thanks for giving this away!!!
YAY Genius Bar.
Rachel is amazing, right. But, so are you ;-) ;-)
Glad you have such amazing friends, darlin' xoxoxo glad they were able to save everything!
Crossing my fingers!

They are full of free stuff and tutorials! Great for dummies, too :-)
I use only GIMP for editing my pictures... It's pretty good for a free software. Of course you can't compare it with Photoshop, but still.... it's a great software!
