I did it.

I drove my eight and seven-year-old to sleep away camp and kissed them good-bye for the week.

I desperately wanted to ask my husband to turn around and drive by their camp sites again just to check in, but I'm glad we didn't. My last glance was of the kiddos flashing the peace sign to me. It's our family's signature good-bye. The one we use when they hop on the school bus ready to begin their school day. The one that means "peace be with you" (idea stolen from my Godmother who said it to her three children everyday of their lives).

My peace comes from a trial run of camps last year when they slept in tents for one night to celebrate the end of outdoor adventure day camp. My peace comes from picking a camp with an awesome private online photo gallery to check in (screen shots of pics below). My peace comes from knowing that my children are simply amazing. Oh em gee, I love them so much it hurts.

"Let me know you are having a great time by giving me a sign, when the counselors take photos. I will be watching online. Peace sign for all-is-good and thumbs up for all-is-awesome." I told them on our drive up to camp. I wasn't expecting a double thumbs up on the first day, especially from my uber sensitive first-born child who cried for five months at preschool drop off when he was four. Oh my, how we have grown.

"Peace be with you, kiddos. Today. Tomorrow. And the rest of your beautiful lives." I told them when I flashed them our signature sign before driving away.

Tonight my heart is filled with enormous pride.

I was a hot mess when my daughter went away for a week of Girl Scout Camp. She loved it, and I was thrilled to hear her stories when she got home.

You should be very proud of both your kiddos. They are so self-confident and independent at such a young age. That says a lot about how you are raising them. Double thumbs up for all of you.

Thanks Tara. Raising confident children is so important to me. We toured the camp before dropping them off and in the dining hall there were so many motivational posters. One that said "Look people in their eyes and say HELLO." I say that all the time at home. too funny!

How cute! Wow, that is such a huge stage in life. :)

Be proud, Mama!

We flash the peace sign as well in my family. How funny. We also have a special family way to say "hugs & kisses".

The last sentence cracked me up SO much...that could have totally been an exchange between me and Dave:) Each year when the boys are at sleep-away camp, I STALK the website updates (they do 3 a day). I have even been known to politely e-mail the person in charge of them if they happen to skip one asking when/if it will be up;) Will goes for 2 weeks which feels very long to me, Can you imagine college????

My kids always say it is one of the best weeks of their whole year. I hope your love it as much too.

Love that they have the photos for the parents to check out online, I bet that is a huge peace of mind. My girls both love sleep away camp, this is the first year in many that they aren't going (due to school getting out later than any year before)

So glad they are doing well! My day of doom is in two weeks when the V-meister leaves for Lithuanian camp. And I'm not even sure if they have a pay phone there.

We did this for the first time last year.

Oh, that first day...their bedrooms just mocked me and taunted me.

But, they had a GREAT time.
