When in India, find Amit. PDF Print E-mail

When planning for our trip to India my sister (a globe trotting trixie) introduced the idea of hiring a driver. Instead of waiting around for India's notoriously late trains, dragging luggage at bus stations and navigating our way through crowded corridors in the second most populated country in the world - a private driver sounded like an excellent idea. After scouring the Internet we settled on the company that responded the fastest and in the most professional manner.

Enter Amit from India Driver Tours.

Amit met us at the airport and instantly won us over. He remained calm throughout the most treacherous traffic while we silently prayed for our lives.

Not only did Amit drive us around India he also provided valuable advice. He instructed us to stay in the car while he purchased water for us so that we received local prices. When exchanging money he called around for the best price. Amit prepared us before every attraction letting us know the price of admission and how to handle the persistent street vendors.

Amit was better than a copy of Lonely Planet and always suggested interesting venues - from restaurants with nightlife to the best mode of transportation to the Taj Mahal.

And unlike a copy of Lonely Planet, Amit answered all our questions about local customs with detailed descriptions and historical backgrounds.

He provided much insight that we would have never otherwise received on our own. Kuddos to him for putting up with our dry sense of humor and girly drama. Amit was our saving grace in India. If you are traveling to India, find yourself an Amit.

Very wise decision indeed. I've had many opportunities to travel to India for work, but never went. My coworkers have gone many times and highly recommend a hired driver... Actually it's a must for many reasons, one of course is for safety and ensuring you are not taken on the 'long route' to your destination.

I've just arrived in Bangalore (after 2 weeks in Warsaw) last night and I found myself a wonderful driver too - Lakshmikant! Don't you think it's amazing how they navigate through traffic amidst the people, motorbikes, autos (motorised ricksaw) and cows! I haven't heard so much honking in my life before! I haven't seen any beggars, was told there are hardly any in Bangalore. This is gonna be a short trip but am definitely coming back to India! Hope you girls enjoy the rest of your stay!

A good friend and world traveler swears by the private tourguide/driver. She says it is expensive but when else will you be in China, India, Dubai etc.

Can you believe it was only $300 for the week? That included tolls & gas. Train/bus tickets for all three of us was nearly just as much. Crazy!

Never thought of hiring a driver! My hubby always travels by local means of transportation, but having a driver sounds so much more enlightening!

That's good advice. Especially in a country where you may not always understand the languages and customs.

Drivers...the only way to go in India and Asia. Your Amit was our Tha last year in Cambodia. Can't imagine what our travels would have been like without his knowledge, connections and friendly face!

My comments keep not going through--grr! Anyway, was just saying I can't wait to read all about your India exploits when I have more bandwidth, and I'm glad to see your sister back blogging as she stopped appearing in my Reader from her old blog a long time ago!
