Halloween: an entire lifetime of things to look forward to. PDF Print E-mail

I think this is the last year that I'm able to greatly influence my children's Halloween costume choices. Although they've always had the opportunity to voice their opinions, I've always been by their side guiding them to make the right choices. Take this horribly written, terribly documented and very bad titled post from two-thousand-and-eight called "Parenting revelations aren't on sale" as an example. I just wasn't ready for my preschooler to dress up as Hannah Montana.

Just like I wasn't ready for my nine-year-old son to dress up as the headless horseman with a decapitated head oozing blood, like he intended this year. Or allowing my seven-year-old daughter to wear a belly dancer costume baring her midriff in mid-October in Ohio. Even my preschooler had different intentions than I did this year and tried to convince me that "Gothic Cheerleader" was just fine for a four-year-old. I guess all their initial choices were fine; but, if you give a sixteen-year-old her first pair of Louboutins what is she going to look forward to when she's thirty-six?

"You have an entire lifetime of things to look forward to, kiddos. Making your own decisions is one of them." I said.

halloween2011

My sassy cheerleader, spooky ghost and talented horse back rider looked back at me and in so many words, in unison, replied "We'll have a lifetime of choices to make on our own, Mama!"

True that, kiddos. You have amazing things to look forward to now and when you are on your own too. For the meantime eat your spinach for strength, brush your teeth three times a day and make sure your mom screens all of your Halloween candy tonight.

How about in your neck of the woods, who decides what the kids will wear?

Pretty incredible, no? Nothing was spot treated or photoshopped. A #WhirlpoolMoms review.

Bravo to the Bob Evans PR firm that didn't require a blogger to attend the festivities but allowed the kiddos to be the eyes and ears.

Right on. Extend the innocence as long as you can. So many of today's costumes would've demanded a leotard and tights beneath in "our day." Wouldn't have even been a question.

I totally agree. Why let kids make all their big decisions now? They have the rest of their lives to make wonderful choices and tragic mistakes, including questionable Halloween costumes, of which I have a few unfortunate pictures of my own.

Your kiddos look awesome! I convinced my kids to go as Ketchup (9 yr old) & Mustard (7 yr old), if I promised to find a hot dog costume for the dog (which I did!). But I think I may lose the battle next yr & will have to concede on either something military (meaning weaponry for props) or gory (fake blood). But then I thought that last yr, so maybe I can eke out another yr or two of innocence?

I just got a notice for KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION for my baby. My baby! Thinking I should homeschool my baby until college.

Bravo, Mama! Bravo! I have a six year old who wanted to go as a policewoman...the different "styles" available for policewomen were appalling!

We are putting off Halloween until our kids are old enough that it's inevitable (mostly because my husband freaks out at the thought of all that candy in our littles' grasp), but in general, yes, we too are trying to find that perfect balance between teaching our children to be independent and think for themselves ... and having that foundation of training to be able to make those right choices.

I haven't had this problem yet even though the boys are 8 & 9. They tend toward tv/movie things - Star Wars & superheros. We went to a party Saturday & the girls were all either 1920's gangsters in pin striped suits & fedoras, 60's hippies in fringy vests & really really wide flare jeans or in 80's neon with huge crimped hair. The boys were all superheros or knights & soldiers. Like they had picked themes. It was cute. Everyone was warm & no one was a 'sexy' anything. Not even the moms. :)

Amen, Mama! Good job! We have those talks all the time with our two girls. The little one only knows big poofy skirt like Big Sister and twirl giggle giggle. The older gets that some things are "inappropriate for little kids", as she puts it herself. Because we are involved parents. So this year? Fully clothed spooky good witches that "cast spells to keep people from drinking drugs and doing bad stuff, Mommy!"
Your children are beautiful and will grow up to be healthy well adjusted individuals. And I stress individuals rather than mindless followers of the trends and masses. Good job, Mama! :)

This post is timely because just yesterday, while shopping the outlets in Aurora, I asked M to choose 2 new shirts - but "mama has to approve". I'm very particular/conservative about what clothes I think are appropriate for a 5 year old. The way I look at it - when she's paying with her own, earned money, she can make the choice. Whether she'll be allowed to wear her choice out of the house is another question. :)

I haven’t had to veto a costume yet, but I have heavily influenced her choices the last 2 years.

PS – M LOVES Lola’s costume!!

A very good and timely post. I have final say in costumes and in clothing. The problem that I am having is finding age appropriate for a 9 year old girl that is the size of a 14 year old and shoes too. It drives me crazy shopping for Iz.
Thanks for the post and Happy Halloween!

I let me kids pick their own costumes this year (they are 7 and 13). My 13 year old was a jester, which was fine by me. I did TRY to influence my 7 year old to be something BESIDES a dark angel, but she insisted. I gave in because she didn't really know what a dark angel/fallen angel was, she just knew that she REALLY wanted to wear these black feathery wings and i lacked the creativity to think of anything else. ugh. How did you "influence" them to choose something else? I really didn't like the dark angel idea, but I didn't want to crush her.
