YES on issue 2. PDF Print E-mail

I gathered my own facts, discussed with my close friends (both liberals and in betweens), had late night sessions with my (conservative) husband and thought I was prepared to vote.  I was a school teacher for many years but never joined my local union because I never agreed with it. It seemed a little too similar to the communism party I was born into. The union was just a little odd, in my eyes, I couldn't be a part of it.

"I can take care of myself. " I said, as a 22 year old teacher at Maycrest High School. Even after 6 years of teaching, I never joined my local teacher's union.

I was going to vote YES on Issue 2. (Here's a brief history: The Ohio Collective Bargaining Limit Repeal appeared on the November 8, 2011 general election ballot in the state of Ohio as a veto referendum. The measure would repeal legislation that limits collective bargaining for public employees in the state.")

Until I looked at my my three American-born, American-bred children that reminded me that they too wanted a chance to become teachers. A shark trainer that teaches sharks to jump. A horse-back riding instructor that teaches young children. A mathematician that teaches others about numbers. All of them enamored by their teachers with dreams of their own. They looked up at me and asked me what I was voting for. I was suddenly tongue tied and perplexed - I could not accurately justify my vote to my children.

Last minute change of heart...  I voted for NO on Issue 2. Why? Because I looked into my children's eyes and, well, the rest is history. The future is theirs.

It's amazing how often a carefully thought-out, well reasoned argument can be beaten back by emotions and love for your kids.

In the end, this isn't about whether unions are right or wrong, there are many times when even I, rabid leftie that I am, think unions are mostly useless.

It *IS* however, about the freedom to organize. Once you've taken that freedom away, it will never, ever return, and the only ones who the absence of unions benefits are those who would seek to take advantage about those who NEED the representation.

Not living in Ohio myself, and not being in America right now, I don't really know what you voted for or against.

I have mixed feelings about unions, but I always appreciate that you take the time to think about how you're going to vote etc, and that you have the courage to share your feelings on those subjects on your blog.

I understand your heart, but I think you might see it differently if you were able to see that unions no longer represent workers. Workers do not get to opt out of unionization. The unions are being led (and paying full-time wallstreet salaries to) professional lobbyists and powerful big guns. They only represent 7% of all workers. The only way a business can make cuts to unionized workers is by firing them-and even then, their hands are tied as the government cronies interfere and make a failing enterprise (whose only reason for being i'n business is to turn a profit) keep going i'n a very socialist-inspired model of employment, with the American taxpayer subsidized it. The Republicans elected in the last Ohio election cycle ran on the platform of stopping the unfettered whining and complaining and demanding of the unions. Out of state union leaders overran the grassroots with overwhelming resources and crushed the conservatives who could never hope to overcome their financial advantage. When the unions make another donation to a democrat politician (their real reason for existing now is money laundering) whose interests are being served? Democracy lost on issue 2. Appreciate your sentiment, but the facts show unions no longer protect the worker.

I'm assuming you no longer feel like unions are like the Communist party?

I am a Republican and I voted no on Issue 2. It wasn't going to hurt the unions, but it WOULD hurt many people who work in the public sector.

Jamie-You said "Out of state union leaders overran the grassroots with overwhelming resources and crushed the conservatives who could never hope to overcome their financial advantage." Well, that happened on BOTH sides. As a Rebuplican, I got all of the flyers, mailings, phone calls, etc. about supporting Issue 2. ALL of the mailings I recieved were from Virginia and ALL of the phone calls I recieved were from Virginia or Wisconsin. BOTH political parties were involved with outside donations. It really wasn't a "grassroots" campaign only in Ohio.

JMH-touché-I only got the opposing info from family. Guess no one can cover the cash from the unions.

I would, however, like to come out in support of the shark trainers union. Those kids kill me, Pauline!
