Coolest Advent calendar ever. PDF Print E-mail

We stopped buying chocolate Advent calendars when we found our toddler in the corner of her bedroom surrounded by wrappers on the first day of December, some years ago. The following year we built an Advent calendar out of small jewelry boxes and filled it with little trinkets which the kiddos fought over. Last year we thought outside of the box and wrote out a calendar with a family activity for each night of December leading up to Christmas.

This year I wanted to top last year's Advent calendar and create something that not only would the kids be excited about but it also needed to be family centered. Luckily I stumbled across this blog post just in time. I was inspired. A book Advent calendar! Twenty-five wrapped books, one for each night - the last one to be opened on Christmas day.

While the kids were in school today I searched the house for any Christmas/winter themed books and collected a dozen or so. I called a neighbor and "swapped" some of our most read books for new-to-us books with her, but I was still a little short. After a trip to the dollar store and Half Price Books I finally had twenty-five books in total. (You can also try Paper Back Swap for free books)

Half Price Books had a great collection of seasonal books and I was thrilled to find books from all over the world. From left to right, a book from Trinidad about a little girl celebrating Christmas, a book about an Inuit Indian's journey to find Christmas spirit, and a book about Hanukkah that made me hungry for potato latkes. I added the book that I wrote "Wigilia: A Tale About a Polish-American Family on Christmas Eve" too.

I wrapped each book in dollar store wrapping paper and waited for the kids to get home from school to see their reactions. They noticed my pile and immediately ran to the calendar to see how many days were left until December 1st.

I have a feeling that this might become a tradition in our house.

What is your favorite winter themed book? I know I'm missing a lot of classics and I'm especially interested in discovering books from around the world.

We do this too! (teamtaseff.com/.../taseff-holiday-traditions) - I wrap all the books in the same paper and do a special one for Christmas Eve in a different wrapping! Our favorites - Snowmen At Night, The Grinch and God Loves You.

I love this idea so much! Brilliant!
My three year old has already had entire Lindt advent calendar's worth of chocolate. While I was at work, so I don't even have to take the blame.

La Befana by tomie dipola. It is about Italy's christmas witch. Which is what I grew up hearing about on my dads side of the family. Since My grandpa is 1st generation to america. Love this story and he does it brilliantly.

This is such a great idea - LOVE IT! It sends the right message, isn't too much of a commitment, and really brings the whole family together. I'm doing this one for sure!

We did this last year and it was so much fun! I plan on doing it again...of course, if your kids are like mine, be prepared for a little fighting over "whose turn is it to pick a book?" "It's not fair, I wanted to open that book" etc...nothing is fool proof in our house!

So cute! Our favorite Xmas book is I see Santa Everywhere. It's about a little boy who goes to therapy because he thinks Santa is stalking him. It sounds creepy because, clearly I'm not a great writer. But, it's hilarious!

We do this too! We also love the Polar Express. We read the book and then watch the movie as well :) A couple of years ago we rode on the Polar Express with our family and the kids Opa and Oma were the Conductor and one of the hot chocolate dancers so it's become a family tradition!

I'm totally stealing this idea. The night I read this post I went home and found that we had 21 Christmas/Winter books already. So I have had to purchase a few and need to pick up one more. Strangely, I'm having a hard time finding good Christmas books at the stores this year. The kids love the idea and have been counting down to the start of the advent calendar. Too funny! Thanks for the great idea. This is sure to become a tradition in our family.

My mom used to read The Best Christmas Pagent Ever to us every year in December. It is such a great book! What a fun idea for an advent calendar. We have an old one my mom made years ago, a Christmas tree with a different tiny decoration to be put on it each day. It has always been my favorite, but I wish I were home this year to do this one with my family.
