There's something surreal about watching my children see the family business bloom. I was their age when we fled Poland. We were unsure of what plans America had for us. No one could have imagined the future in store for us.
Last month my sister appeared on ABC Chicago representing our family business. This morning we gathered around the computer to watch my brother on NBC Chicago promoting the business some more. The kiddos screamed with delight and waved at the screen every time they saw Uncle Mike. "Look at Meeeeehow, he is on TV!" (Meeeeehow is the pronunciation for Michal or Michael, in Polish).
"Can I please work at DOMitp this year at the Christkindl Market? Jay was my age when he started working!" seven-year-old Lola begged.
Even though we aren't in Chicago on a daily basis, I love that my children are exposed to our family business (much thanks to my Marquette roommate Kimberly, owner of Motion PR in Chicago, who we hired to promote us and boy did she deliver). And when we are in Chicago, I love that my children will ditch "Breakfast with Santa" to work long hours beside my parents.
Turns out that America had great plans for our family. Here's the first born child in America from our family, my brother, promoting the family business.
My kiddos have big shoes to fill. |
