I've written five blog posts in the last two weeks but never published them.
After reading through what I wrote I've decided to keep our situation private online (for our beloved children) and just let you guys know that we are moving to Chicago late this summer. We have put in countless hours into our decision and weighed out all options (from Cleveland to Abu Dhabi!) - there have been many sleepless nights. This decision has totally consumed us, these past six months. Our children know just as much as you do - that we are moving to Chicago. They haven't asked many questions, they're sad to leave their good friends behind but are over-the-moon excited for a new adventure. No need to worry them (or you) with dramatic Lifetime TV screenplays. All of our good friends and family know the details.
We've lived our lives thinking we would never ever leave the area and have worked hard to build a beautiful life as a family in a ridiculously awesome community in the Cleveland that we adore surrounded by amazing friends. The husband and I spent the better part of this evening reading through my blog archives with heavy hearts. This blog has been a testament of our love affair with life and Cleveland. It's a bittersweet time in our lives.
So sad to go, but looking forward to the future. |

1- Pack a "first to unpack" box with one towel each, one set of sheets each, and anything else you will need in the first 24 hours. It is guaranteed that the more you need it, the harder the box will be to find.
2- As a family, choose something in your old house that really makes it feel like home - a set of curtains, a particular picture on the wall, whatever. Make it the very first thing that you put up at the new house.
3- Make the first night in the new house a family slumber party with the mattresses on the floor and order pizza. It makes for great memories and gets off to a good start.
Godspeed!
I know you have lots of tearful goodbyes ahead of you and there is nothing that will make them easier. But I wholeheartedly believe every tear will be rewarded with lots of new joy and adventure. I can't wait to read about all of them. xo
I just wish you'd chosen Abu Dhabi! thats where im from.. i've been a reader for years and it would've been like a celebrity moved here for me LOL
Good luck with the move! i hope it is an easy one for the kids..
Best wishes! Are you moving to the city or the 'burbs?
I ditto Stephanie's comments -- I have other tips if you want them, but definitely let your kids be involved in the packing ... it can be scary when the heavy lifting of a pack out is done when they ARENT at home ... leave the house as they remember it and come home to empty (= scary!)
